Passenger side axle removal question

So I had all the drivetrain fluids drained recently, then I find out my passenger side cv boot has a little tear in it. I ordered a oem boot kit, just received that.

Now my question is, am I required to drain the trans fluid? I really don't want to because I just spent $90 on a gal of diaqueen to throw that in the garbage, I know fluid will spill out but I can just top the fluid off then.

I will hopefully be doing the job on a lift. Another question is should I order a axle nut and pin?

Help is much appreciated, thanks.

I just replaced my passenger side axle a few weeks ago.

It actually goes into the transfer case. I drained the case, but I don't think it is necessary. It looks like the axle is at a higher level than the fill plug.

I used the old nut, but replaced the cotter pin.

Which boot, inner or outer? The reason I ask is because if doing the outer I'm pretty sure the inner has to come off first to get to the outer.

if you jack the car up for that side and pop the axle out you should be able to just top off the fluid when you done, shouldnt lose that much fluid.

Outer, one closest to wheel hub.

Why would I need to take the inner off? Then I might as well get another axle if this is the case?

I thought I'd remove the axle, cut off the bad boot, remove the retaining clip, hammer off the joint off the shaft, fill it up with grease then put on the new boot.

I've never done a boot job on an Evo. However, on other Mitsubishi vehicles I have worked on the outer joint did not disassemble. Both boots went on from the inboard end. Checking the Evo Service Manual I don't see a disassembly procedure for the outer joint. So, I am assuming the process here is the same.

This, just to warn you that you might need another boot.

Bettr to just do a axle exchange from a place that rebuilds them. you are better off .UNLESS YOU HAVE THE SPECIAL TOOL FOR THE BOOT CLAMPS.
