Engine removal tips?

So i'm going to be helping a buddy out this weekend, he decided to try and pull his motor out of his evo mr and has parts everywhere and his car has been sitting at the hobby shop for over a month...

Now i have a service manual but i've been told by some local evo gurus that the engine can be removed from the top of the car with the trans still attatched

i was going to remove it from the bottom by taking the lower sub frame off but i'm just curious from someone who has done it before on how you guys manage to take your motors out. i've searched and havent been able to find anything

Last week-end i just took my engine out from the bottom...altough it was easier because i have a lift in my garage but it was quite a job.

From under you take out the downpipe, the front support frame, dismantle the front section of the driveshaft , unhook the suspension lower to get them aside but can stay there attached by the ball joint....

from the upper side you remove the radiator, the intercooler piping, intake, battery and it's tray, also the intercooler, you need to unhook the AC but keep it connected to its hoses.

Hum , i guess forgot a few step but it is about it..... Good luck! took bout 5 hours

I Did it through the top. It was a PITA. But I have done dozens of dsm's this way, so i figured it was possible on the evo. My wife and I did it. The trick is to pull the tcase, angle the hoist strap so the engine is higher than the trans, once everything is cleared, your golden. Link to my build thread shows a few specifics/pics to my method.

Also took mine out the top with the trans attached and it wasn't that bad. Had to remove the TC, oil filter housing and a couple of pulleys. I also removed everything from the front side of the engine, but you may get away with leaving the exhaust manifold and turbo on.

I also had an engine leveler which I think made it much easier, as I could raise a bit, then tilt, and raise some more, etc... It ends up coming out at quite an angle as you can see:

Good luck!

Oh, and one tip - pop your throwout bearing before you remove the engine from the car so you don't have to do it with the engine hanging over your head.... was a little nerve racking.

I pulled mine out the bottom. Just leave the t-case in the car and you can drop the engine/trans out the bottom real easy especially with a hoist.

A Little update....

i ended up taking the guys motor out through the bottom, i don't recommend doing it unless you have access to a lift but man was it easy! Took way less time than it did for me to take the tranfer case out.

To make it simple, all you have to do is take the wiring harness off the motor and put it to the side, take out the radiatior exhaust ect.. drop the subframe, or lower it and support it with a jack stand or engine stand, then taking taking the driveshaft, transfer case is easy!! all u gottah do is make sure to take off the steering rack rod and drop everything down from the bottom.. took me no time at all!

i've heard you can take it from the top.. but that seems like it would be pretty hard to do without scratching up alot of stuff
