Evo 8 - Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS)

Is there anyway to test this sensor while it's out of the car? I've read the manual and nothing in there says how to test it.

I would say no. You could probably only check resistance. To really check it you would need it on a car with it operating and using a scope to watch the pattern.

Thanks for the advice and input.

Would a bad cps cause no spark?

most definitely.
The cam trigger tells the ECU when it can start the spark/ignition timing.

Thanks.

I'm just gunning down the possibilities right now.

Checked fuses - no blown fuses (checked fuse box in engine bay and inside the cabin)
Already checked codes - no codes
Checked coil packs per manual - both sets checked out good
Checked plug wires per manual - checked out good
Changed coil packs - no spark still
Changed plugs - no spark still..
Now just need to check cam position sensor and crank angle sensor..

Battery is new and was plugged in to a car jumper when cranking..

There's fuel.. just no spark..

best bet, find someone locally who has the same car as you and swap over sensors etc if possible. Could be a faulty crank angle sensor too?

make sure you check voltage to the sensors too, you might have a wiring fault. cam and crank angle sensors should have 12volts on the red/yellow wire (IIRC), earth on black and signal on the other.

i've just had a massive problem with my setup and my aftermarket ecu.
turns out i had a faulty cam angle sensor on the exhaust, which was cauing triggering faults when cranking, but then it was ok once the car was running etc.

Swapped over the sensors from intake to exhaust side (mivec head) and Boom, can starts up and runs first time.

Gutted lol

find the Crank position sensor wiring.
find the cam position sensor wiring

hook up an oscilloscope on the signal wires and set to trigger @ 1v.
This will give you 2 channels of square wave output

I did this on my setup and found my exhaust cam angle sensor was on the ****, it kept on jumping around.

this is my 12 tooth custom crank trigger (using stock sensor) and the exhaust cam angle trigger pulses.
the ex cam angle sensor is "off/low" for 3 crank trigger pulses. When it was faulty it would jump up to 7 pulses.

I'm putting my motor back together and the cams back in, the end of the cam has a slot in it for the sensor, the sensor can fit 2 ways (unless its made idiot proof to only fit 1 way i didnt check) one way, with the 2 teeth on one side and other side with 1 tooth opposite, and if you turned the sensor wheel the 2 tooth side would be on bottom and vice versa....does it matter which way its installed as long as it sits in the groove? I would think it might think the cam is out of phase or something and dont want to tear it apart again so anybody know and know what im talking about?
