"As mentioned in the other thread, the stock car would knock at 4000rpm, inducing knock sensor activity, making power from 4000-5000rpm very inconsistent and lumpy between runs. I had to adjust timing and fuel curves accordingly to fix this. Cost a bit of torque in that narrow region but I couldn't really help that. This will not be an issue with the 93-94 octane maps which are actually more (not less) aggressive than stock in that region." Quote from shiv on his terrible looking 1st reflash dyno sheet

It seems i may have given more credit than credit was due on their reflashing skills

I suggest they go back to the drawing board

What ever happend to Shiv'e erroneous spark plug theory of detonation ? (maybe there was more than meets the eyes?)

I have encountered MANY a knocking stock evo

IN ALL CASES we were able to tune out the detonation - totally - while increasing power throughout the power band - and making tons of low end trq in the process

I have yet to see the performance mod on an evo which actually reduced low end power (except maybe a bigger turbo) and now the X flash or what ever they call it

Get some decent dyno sheets, take two asprins and call me in the am

Hell make a MBC for $20 at Home Depot, buy a used SAFC for $200 and run 12.5's in the 1/4 for $220. Now do you run race gas every day and how long do you think this setup would last? I bet I could run a 12.5 with just a $20 MBC, who really cares?

Was that on Californian 91 octane gas Al? Of course it wasn't.

You all are digging some mighty big holes here for yourselves.

For all of Al's brow raising, he happens to be willing to try, and try, and try, and try, and constantly is going to the track and/or to the dyno to see the results.

Shiv on the other hand obviously knows his way around an ecu...but at the end of the day, I think his own arroagance gets in the way of sharing knowledge. Tuning is far from brain surgery..it takes some very general engine knowledge, and more importantly, knowing your way around whatever software you happen to be running. Theory is a very important part of tuning...but its just that, theory. What ends up happening in the real world is often vastly different from what you theorize to be the case.

I realize to a certain extent you are all in competition with each other, but man the BS that gets slung is unreal. Pump gas, race gas, whatever the hell it is it is. I think we can all take a relatively open minded approach and see that a car with 91 octane cannot run as well as a car on 94 octane. But guess what, its all pump gas, so its all relative. If a dyno queen is what you are after, put some C16 in and strap her down.

If I were a customer now, as opposed to being on the other side of the desk, I'd honestly sit back and grab some popcorn, because there is nothing to be learned by reading this thread.

I agree that a datalog of a real run is the best for spool response tests. But all I am saying is that a good dyno run with baselines is alot better for my use than a timeslip.

With a dyno sheet and a baseline run I can use that information more easily than a trap speed. I don't drag race anymore so the trap speed isn't that informative for me.

What does a trap speed tell you about spool up or low end power?

I still like Dyno Dynamics better for tunning.

Well, I learned that Al can't translate the EVO's hexidecimal ECU code very well

At the lead of the pack is David Buschur with his 11.6 on a stock turbo. That's just simply amazing. To those that think building a drag car is infantile and beneath their abilities. Go try to duplicate what David and Al have done. Until then you simply have ZERO to say,and your opinions on tuning are MOOT!!!

Going 11.6 on a stock turbo is not easy. trapping 12XMPH is not easy either. If you think its so simple GO DO IT.

Learning to drive a line around a race track, learning entry points apex entry angles and corner exit points is much easier then making HP. Road racing is more driving and car setup then HP. Go make 1000HP like David has done then you may have some merrit to engauge in a conversatin in regard to the 4g63 engine. again if its so easy then go do it.

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow what do you think people who drive drag cars? That has to be super easy compared to engine building.

</sarcastic>

Road racing taxes many more areas of a car than drag racing but power still wins most times. Just that peak power is slightly less important than in drag racing. The testing is much more complex. I have the highest respect for the truly gifted racers.

I think that's (for lack of a better word) ignorant (I mean no disespect...its not harder or easier, its just different.

As for the trap speeds, I ahve seen a small few hit close to or eclipse 120 on a stock turbo....so why are we saying 111 is impressive? 9 mph is a whole chunk of HP.....

And I learned that the much anticipated X flash actually makes less trq than a detonating stock evo - interesting

Agreed - I made 119 mph on my stock turbo back in June

So the built motor, GT3037 turbo, stand alone, etc,. was worth another 2mph in trap speeds?

honestly, I've been down all this BS slinging between modern performance and howell automotive (my sponsor) before. It's childish, and I can't help but think lower of both parties, but more so at the one that started.

I pick up my evo on Friday, I was looking at the xede setup, it looked decent, but I'm not buying it after this bullcrap. Vish, why don't you grow up and be a little bit more professional and have some tact when dealing with your customer base (which would be this website). Every company will have their little group of lackies, that defends each other to the end, but I see dynoflash and buschur as a much more respectable group to be dealing with then an egotistical, too skerred to go to the track big headed tuner from CA.

I don't know, maybe down the road shiv's picture in my head will clear up, but as of right now, I wouldn't deal with him imho

So far !

You see - I have a very conservative approach

My additude is I ONLY go fast enough to keep on top of the record list

WHY risk breaking something just to prove a point ?

I drive this car every day - I really cant afford to break something major

When the time comes I will be shocking some people with some crazy times

In the meantime - I am detuning the Evo and getting the snow tires mounted so I can have some winter fun
