Shifter Assembly Help!!!

Hey guys, I need some help. I don't know what the **** the last person who owned this car was thinking, but obviously didn't have much of a brain. I have attached two pics of my shifter linkage assembly. The bottom piece of the shifter which I'm guessing locks into the white plastic piece for the cable is like wire held onto it. My guess is he broke it and didn't fix it right. What do I need to do?? Change the whole cable or just the plastic piece? I need some help guys, so I can get this fixed right! Thanks!!

Sorry for the ****ty phone pics, but that's all I have at the moment.

I'm trying to see from your pictures what its in reference to ... I can't seem to get a point of origin on what's broken where ... if you could included a zoomed out picture and mebby a quick windows paint arrow to where things are broken, I can cross reference that to my own Evo.

Thanks!

Its the piece that the actual shifter locks into. Like on the opposite ends of the threads for the shift know, its almost like a ball. I am guessin it locks into the white plastic piece which is connected to the cable. But, from what i can see that plastic piece looks to be broke and its held together with some wire.

I think you're right ... I vaguely remember the ball at the end of the shifter.

If I remember correctly, the left to right movement of the shifter bar moves into one of three positions on one cable. The up and down movement moves between one of three positions on the other cable.

I don't remember how it does this exactly, nor do I remember how the plastic piece connects to the end of the shifter lever, but my transmission is out at the moment and I can look directly at my box tonight just as soon as I get home from work.

I will tell you as soon as I know.

I believe the cable that hooks to this is the one for the up/down movement, least thats how it looks.

Yes ... on the shifter there is a side bar that moves as you move the shifter left and right. The part that you see broken is a plastic block that's connected to the cable for the forward to backward movement.

The way its built is: (from top to bottom):

Shifter, Metal Perimeter Clip, Shifter Ball into Plastic Block. What I think you're seeing is somebody who lost or broke something near the metal ring clip.

I'd call up a Mitsu dealership and see if they can fax you over a parts diagram. I'm hoping they would have a new plastic block for you and a metal clip. My other hope is the cable fits into the plastic block with a barrel or some other "standard" cable connection.

Good Luck!

We actually compared it to my friends and the white block actually seems to be in good condition. The metal clip seems to be broke which is why they wired it instead. Mitsu only sells the block and clip with the whole cable assembly so for now im just going to search for a new clip or possibly make my own.

I'd love to hear your fix.
I've always wanted to know how to recreate a spring clip with a few corners. I think when they form clips like that they put the part in a bending / pressed jig and then probably heat treat it, to anneal it in that position.
Thanks!

It looks like he attempted on changing the shifter and during the process he broke the metal retainer or the actual plastic housing that the metal retainer goes into. here are a couple of pics hopefuly can help u visual how its suppose to be.
