Unhappy Car will not start please help

Hi everyone my 03 evo wont start. I turn the key to the acc position and I can hear a loud noise of gears turning or something close to that description in the glove box. I think I have a bad starter, or it could be the ignition cylinder but Im really intrigued as to what this loud noise is.
Also my evo doesn't start as well as my friends evo, both are stock and the sound of his igniting sound so much sharper and louder where as mind does not sound like that anymore. i checked the battery, already and its good. but can anyone here please help me diagnose this problem before i go out and purchase parts? I would appreciate it so much.
Thank you guys in advance for comments and suggestions.

Does the car crank at all?

The sound you hear might be your power steering pump or something else driven by the accessory belt. I don't know how loud this noise is that you hear. Any comparison?

You might also want to try getting the alternator checked.

Cheers

If you still have power in the car it could be the alternator or the starter. If you can hear the clicking from the starter, it's most likely your alternator.
