Ok so the crack let water into the cylinder and caused Hydrolock...

and basically this caused the rod to break.

So failure cant be blamed on a weak eagle rod - any rod would have failed in this situation...

I knew something else was the cause for your eagle rod to break...

So what we learned today is dont blame anything to begin with. The title of this thread should have been-

"2.4L engine failure, what caused it?"

What happened instead was a bunch of bashing that didnt need to on both sides. Eagles werent the issue it and neither was the tuner or mechanic. It probably was fine, got a hot spot during tuning or a little too much cylinder pressure and a fabulous coreshifted block (sonic check the next one) and its all over.

"2.4L engine failure, what caused it?"LOL Thats true!!!
The block is bore to 87mm, I don't think that made the wall too thin. I bought the engine(without the head) fom a wreked car that probably overheted before. I'm just guessing. BTW I don't know of a shop here that do "sonic..." thing.

I would definitely say the crack in the cylinder is what caused the rod to break, all that water coming into the cylinder hydrolocked the motor, all that pressure has to go somewhere, and it found the weakest link, the rod.. Although not saying eagle rods are weak cause I run them in a damn near 800whp car with plenty of tq and haven't had an issue. Not many rods will survive what yours went through though.

Sucks man, what are your plans now? sticking with the 2.4L? or back to 2.0L?

Coreshift and high cylinder pressure I would assume based on how it looks compared to the ones we have had fail like that. Semi common in 2.4 blocks from Mitsu not so much from Hyundai. The other thing to keep in mind is a sonic check at the machine shop can tell you a lot. We have cracked 2.0L blocks with methanol issues, AEM malfunctions, and one 4G64 block that was shifted (I knew beforehand but didnt think it was that bad). Sometimes it seems it just happens.

It seems to happen the most on #1 at around 10:00 or so. Sean@FFTEC also has had this issue in the past and even sleeved blocks to get away from it. I have been thinking about 3/4 filling mine or selling it and building another one if I want to run over 800whp regularly. At 700whp +/- it seems to not be a problem. I know that Dave Buschur has also commented on this more than once as well.
