John Shepherd's DSM ACT street clutch is calculated to hold about 480ftlbs. He makes over 600ftlbs and runs 8.7s (on slicks). I think the only reason he can get away with it is how he drives. He is trying to protect the transmission by getting it all the way locked up and then squeezing it. We calculate clutch torque capacity based on coefficient of dynamic friction (slipping), not static friction (locked up). Static friction is typically much higher. Now if John squeezed it full throttle while the clutch is trying to engage I have no doubt it would go up in smoke.
As far as the competition, I don't know what to tell you, especially HKS since I don't have a lot of experience with their clutches. I haven't heard anything bad about their stuff. We supplied sa few clutches to them (HKS USA) for project cars on occasion and they are great folks.
i own the cucso and twin disk(carbon) and having nothing but amazing things to say about it, i posted about it a couple days ago you can look it up if ya want, but i wouldnt buy anything else, Mmmm carbon!
