Blown Engine?

Decided to go out for a drive today. Was pretty cold, around 20 degrees or so. Maybe less than that.

I wasn't getting on it too hard since it was below freezing. Anyway, I'm coming home on the highway after about a 2-hour drive and was accelerating pretty hard up to around 90 or so, when I hear/feel a pop or 'hiccup' from the engine, then a lot of pure white smoke pours out the back. I immediately pull over, shut down the engine, and there's a lot of white smoke coming out from under the hood. Also the car was leaking greenish fluid (coolant?). Checked the dipstick after about 20 minutes, looked like there was still oil but it was dark out, so I'm not sure.

Didn't take any chances, had it towed right home.

Only mods are an Apexi AVCR (set to 19 lbs.) and a K&N cone filter.

Any guesses as to the status of my engine?

You might be lucky and it's only blown off one of the intercooler hoses. That would make a pop noise and the engine might die. There is normally some oil residue in the IC the could have caused the smoke if it got onto the exhaust.

I think your lower radiator hose, or the heater hose blew open. You might have a stuck thermostat. Try to trace where the coolant is coming from in the engine bay. I think there's a coolant hose running to the turbo too, check that out. Good luck

hey man, sounds like your anti freeze tubing or coolant box popped. Thats might be due to cold temperatures, then when heat hits the cold plastic its reaction is to expand suddenly, so that might be it

Just checked the oil and coolant, both are reasonable levels. I would go and look into it more but its 10 degrees outside, so I'll have to look more tomorrow.

The engine didn't die, I came off the throttle, pulled it out of gear and it spooled down and I cut it off once the car stopped.

Well, I dunno; I saw a lot of white smoke in the rearview, so it may have been streaming under the car or coming out of the exhaust. Definitely white, not blue, or black.

Thanks guys for your help here

i doubt u blew your engine. like the others said. The pop you heard was probably a hose bursting or poping off, and then coolant started spewing out everywhere, and steaming like crazy.

it may not have been coming out of your exhuast...the coolant might have just like sprayed all over the motor and evaporated...it would make a tremendous amount of smoke expecially if its cold out...but i dunno if it would make the engine get messed up.

Car has 3400 miles on it. Changed the oil at 2200 too. Guess I'll have it towed on Monday.
