Strange engine failure, two different engines
I would also lean towards an overly aggressive tune. Timing is a killer to rod bearings, Aem is also very easy to filter the knock out to show zero knock unless properly configured.
That sucks to hear Jon!
If the tuner is who I think it is, he's been tuning for a long time. My guess is 10+ years.
Post the bearing pictures and let us know what you find.

interesting... would love to know more. my car was tuned by tobs with zero problems almost 2.5-3 years ago. I dont really drive the car hard at all. probably get on it once every 2-3months (lol I know) but I like the guy who tuned both those cars and its not like he just started tuning those E85 cars. he is a good tuner. did you talk to him about this? what did he has to say about it? I am interested because I am thinking about taking my car there for him to tune it (because Tobs is far away now)
GL with this. it is really sad to see all those nice cars get F***** up due to tune errors. I believe the STI was at 510awhp when this happened and it was like 2 days after the tune!! (they lowered the boost before leaving the dyno) the guy didnt even have fun in that car!
let us know how it goes.
