kinda sounds like im overboosting especially if im in 4th or 5th speeding up from low rpm's. my turbo soudns like its screaming too much
could overboosting cause my service engline soon light to come on or even flicker?
plz help

 

if the check engine lights flickering it probably has tephra mod on it and its telling you the cars detonating .. not good.

what turbo? - if its a bigger turbo flooring it low rpm in 4th, 5th, isnt the best idea.. it creates compressor surge since the engine wont be able to take all the air in.

if neither of the above, then probably fuel cut multipliers need adjusted in the rom itself.

 

What mods do you have?

 

low rpm + high gear + WOT = Boom---------(ok, not always)

 

im running 23 psi on the stock turbo
i have to do a boost leak test because i have a boost leak somewhere and im thinking that my CEL is flickering because of that

 

Make sure u don't have te tephra mod could be you knock sensor.

 

Also think it might be the knock sensor.

 

23 psi on stock turbo is nothing. also if you had that big of a boost leak the car would feel sluggish as hell. are you sure your not hearing pinging?

 

As posted, flashing cel is tephra mod., NOT a factory thing. Lots of people that do street tunes only do 3rd gear so the chances are higher you will get a little knock in a gear that you will spend more time in a load cell area. Why only 3rd, many don't want to take the chance of running a car to 120 on a public street. Cops look down on that. Also check for boost leaks. Poor fuel quality can throw some knock too. If you can stick to higher quality fuels, from shell, chevron...

 

Definitely dont hear any pinging, whenever im in boost and my SES light flashes i feel a dramatic loss in power

 

Very nice off the cuff analysis, Tom. If the OP is getting audible detonation then he'd best tread lightly. Even inaudible detonation can prove to be destructive. Get it logged soon.

Th CEL/SES flashing is telling you that your engine is detecting knock. Fast flash indicates high knock. The loss in power could be your ECU pulling the timing due to the knock (not sure, I haven't experienced this myself).

Overboosting? 23psi is not an excessive amount of boost if your car is tuned properly.

Has your car been tuned? If so, was it tuned by a shop or by some dude down the street?

 

When the timing is pulled due to knock the turbo will make an odd sound. One owner described it as sounding like he had a goat under the hood. On my DSM, I had a bad lifter and the knock sensor was hearing it and pulling ALL the timing. I barely had enough power to pull away from a stop sign. Yeah, the turbo kinda sounded like a goat bleating. It wasn't happy.

Again, there is nothing from the factory that will make the SES light flicker or flash. That is the TephraMod telling you the engine is knocking.

 

It's standard OBD2 protocol in factory form for the PCM to flash the SES light for a hard missfire which is a catalyst damaging event. Or like stated above you've got Tephra... and it's knocking.
