What Is This Sound?

http://youtu.be/D_eVKOU0pAQ

After my round of mods (listed below) I have this new rattle from the front end. It sounds like some metal part that is rattling so doubt it's the undertray.

Thoughts?

Does the speed of the knock increase when you give the car a rev???

Or does it change or go away when you press the clutch in??

Thank you for asking, that's a good question, about details I should have included in the OP.

it's not related to the clutch. it's a vibration based on a resonant frequency, so it doesn't match the engine speed but comes and goes briefly in relation to it. it's not normally this clear and constant a sound. to accomplish that I had to lug the engine in 1st, at idle, up a hill. it usually happens only for a moment to a couple of seconds, when the engine is not warm in lower gears with low RPMs. It took me a few days to isolate it like this. At first I wasn't even sure I heard it because it's so momentary and sporadic.

My guess (hope?) is that this is what people mentioned could happen with an upgraded FMIC without all the stock brackets.

Thoughts?

Check to see if the heatshield is hitting the cat or some other part of the exhaust. I had a similar issue. The heatshield had to be bent a bit to kill the rattle.

The FMIC might be causing this. My ETS FMIC on my talon did this and I just tightened the mount bolts and it was fine after that. As far as anything else, I'd look at either the exhaust vibrating on something or the CP's too. Anything that is close to something else I'd be looking at to see if it's rubbing a little.

Sounds like some kind of piping is hitting something under the car. Check your downpipe clearance and make sure the IC piping isn't something somewhere.

thanks. that same heatshield came completely loose on mine, caused an annoying rattle and I ended up yanking it but that was last year some time.

all the TBE heat shields are gone now and I was under there looking around after the install and everything looked very secure and tight.

I will be at the shop tomorrow morning AM to tie up some loose ends, and I'll see If they can help me find it.

I'm hoping it's the intercooler. I'll check the mounts on that and recheck the downpipe cause I wasn't looking for clearance when I looked it over (which I should have, obviously).

To check the FMIC mount bolts I need to remove the undertray, right? Or is that a "remove the bumper" type of job?

Here, I re-recorded it in the proper context:

It got easier to do because it's getting worse.

The downpipe was hitting the second chassis brace (2nd from the front). They put it on the lift, gave it a tap. Bingo.

They put two extra washers on the chassis brace (they'd already put two on the first one to get that to clear when they installed) and I was off to the races.

This was a downpipe fitment issue with the Buschur Racing downpipe. I guess the rubber of the hangers had started to sag. Hopefully the sound will not come back, otherwise I'll be trying to figure out how to bend the hanger arms downward to lift the pipe upward.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

I was going to say exhaust... Mine had the same issue when i installed my turn down. It ended up being the down pipe rattling against the two parallel stabilizer bars just before the exhaust reaches the cat. All I did was take those off and mine was good to go. It only seems like it is getting worse because you notice it..haha Glad you fixed the issue though
