HKS GDmax Clutch Install help!!
HKS GDmax Clutch Install help!!
When installing the HKS GDmax, how is the Throw out bearing attached to the HKS cluch cover plate?
WARNING: If you haven't been into the transmission or worked with an HKS GDmax clutch for the EVO, the following may make no sense at all. Even if you have, it may not make any sense. It is kind of hard to explain.
The HKS coverplate has a hub that is mounted to it using a flat washer, wave washer, and an external snap ring. With this attached to the clutch cover plate, then on page 12 of the HKS manual it shows the TOB going thru the hub mounted in the previous step. The internal diameter of this hub has a small metal piece, flat washer, wave washer, and then an internal snap ring. If this is used to secure the TOB to the HKS cover plate, then how does it hold it? I don't see how it could hold it to the TOB? On the factory setup, you have to pry the TOB away from the clutch cover plate with the screwdriver. On the stock setup, there was a wedgecollar and a wave washer that attached the Stock clutch coverplate to the throwout bearing. Are these two parts reused with the HKS clutch?
BTW, what is the trick to aligning the clutch discs up when tightening down the clutch cover plate to the flywheel? I have read, that the standard clutch alignment tool wont work?
Thanks,
Brian

hrmm you didn't get an alignment tool either? i had this issue with my exedy, good luck aligning both disks without one, if you have one just leave it in.
And the deal with the TOB, it just snaps in, don't worry it won't comeout there is a trick to it....but it just snaps right in.
you don't need to reuse the wave washer or wedgecollar..

Did you install an HKS GDmax in yours? Or does Exedy use the same type of attachement to the TOB as the HKS does? I thought the Exedy used the same type of connection that the factory did?

Hi Brian,
you are correct, the exedy uses the same clip as stock while the HKS one has a different setup. your best bet will be to contact superz on this board. is name is Gil and he has done quite a few clutches for people in the area including the HKS, EXEDY AND CUSCO. he will be able to help you out with the questions you have.
thanks and good luck

I have PMed superz, but I don't think he gets on the forums until after midnight east coast time. I was trying to get this thing installed back on the car today. The HKS has a hub that attaches to the clutch cover plate. Internally in this hub is a metal ring, wave washer, flat washer and an internal snap ring. This is a spring type mechanism similiar to the wave washer and wedge collar used on the stock setup. However I don't see how the TOB is secured to the HKS hub. In the HKS picture, it shows the TOB going into the center of this and doesnt show the wedge collar. Just want to make sure I do it right. It is a tough job doing this on jack stands. I only want to do it once.

Thanks superz. It worked how I thought it did. Just needed a little insight into how that little piece locked on to the TOB. The HKS definitely looks like a better, more robust way to attach the TOB to the pressure plate than the factory style. Hopefully I can get this thing put back together tonight. Eyeballing the alignment on the clutch disc before tightening the pressure plate down is a little hard on the retinas. I hope I got it right.

Yeah eyeballing the alignment is a bit of a pain, you wouldnt think it would be that hard for HKS to center drill the flywheel for an alignment tool.
The bar replaces the existing fork shaft that holds the throwout fork. You have to pull the existing shaft and a little ,maybe nickle sized, brass cover off the top of the tranny covering a hole over the shaft. The new shaft slides down the hole and is held in place by the little bent plate c-clip and a bolt.(the mounting position is already on the trans with a threaded hole for the bolt) If you ever need to replace this clutch you have to pull the FORK SHAFT, the throwout bearing is locked to the pressure plate with a c-clip you can only detach the TOB after dissasembling the clutch. Hope this helps.

ill born has it right about the steel bar that comes with the clutch. It is needed because of the new improved way that HKS secures the TOB to the pressure plate. Mine is extremely noisey during rev downs when your foot is off the gas and down shifting or even letting off the gas at 2500 RPM's or more. This is a bit annoying, but you can get used to it. Is sounds like a heat shield rattling, but goes away when you get on the throttle again.
