Help me decide... T-Case / Trans rebuild

So I have a 2003 (origional owner), and a few hundred miles from 100K, Mainly street car/DD but I'm planning to start tracking it (finally) once I get another DD (early winter) and I can keep my car for weekend rides or AutoX/Circut tracks.

Anyway my clutch has been on its way out (exedy HD Twin disk) and I've been putting it off since when I pull the clutch I've wanted to do the Transmission and T-Case at the same time. Well it started slipping the other day and since its my DD I have to do a clutch rebuild and cant put it off any more. While I have the T-Case and Transmission out I would love to do them both out but its just not a good time for me finanically to do everything. I'm already pulling it my self to save the money.

So I'm trying to figure out what to do, do I do the T-case stage 1 rebuild and swap out the open diff for the WeavTrac or do I rebuild the Tranny and add the evo 9 1st gear option? There doesnt seem to be anything wrong with my tranny that I'm aware of, and my t-case I think is starting to whine a little, I notice it in the higher gears not bad but its there.

Figure I would throw this out there and see what you would do.

If you're on a budget, an rs front diff would be a cheaper option but it wont have a warranty like an aftermarket unit. Keep in mind that your car will be out of comission for several weeks depending on who rebuilds it. I sent mine to TRE. Last I knew they were booked out about a month but the price, customer service and quality of work is why I chose them. Good luck!

I jut looked and TRE does offer a core exchange service so that would help cut down on your downtime.

Yeah then at the same time I want to do things right, if I'm going to do it I learned to do it right the first time which is why rather then do both I figured I'd focus on one or the other. Just trying to figure out if I should do the tranny or t-case.

I think this is when they have them avaliable which they dont always. I'll have to call them, I e-mailed them and they haven't e-mailed me back yet... I'll ask them when I call.

If you're tranny is still shifting fine then definitely do the T-case first. No need to rebuild a good working tranny.

yeah thats my thought... there is a good reason to prevent anything going wrong especially with 100K miles, but when $$ is a factor I think I'll cut that from the plans.

Still want to replace buschings since the suspension is getting slippy and would rather put that money toward a MaxLock rear diff.

If it aint broke don't fix it for sure. But if you don't wanna have to pull the tranny again in the near future it might be worth it if you have the cash to do it right now. Ultimately its your decision and as long as your tranny is fine it sounds like either decision will be ok.

Yeah... which is why I'm leaning to do the T-Case... hate the open diff.

I'm basically in the same boat as you, except I am replacing an engine, so I am not sure whether to bite the bullet now or just wait it out, but it seems like it would be better to be done with it and have that peace of mind not having to worry

When I was in that boat I decided to just do the clutch. I had a ACT at the time and knew it woudnt hold what I wanted so dropped in the Exedy twin disk.

I think I'm going to do the T-case... get rid of the open diff and worry about doing the transmission down the road or when it starts acting a fool. Plus the T-Case is starting to Whine so I think its wise to go that route.

The only thing wrong with my trans is the 5th gear grind but that's only in high rpm so I'm not sure if a rebuild is a complete necessity at this point, and the tcase hasn't had a death whine yet (Knock on wood), but I would definitely say replace that asap, maybe look into the rear diff upgrade although I know its not being covered in this thread

well if ya have the 5th gear grind I guess thats a different story. Car is a money pit.. if your not fixing it you'll always be looking for the next upgrade.

MaxLock diff is in my near future once I get my finances back under control after this.

I'm in complete agreement with you. If you were me would you look into a tcase rebuild as well while everything is out?
