Anyone done valve seals with head on?

I have had an oil burning issue since I bought my car. I replaced the exhaust valve seals cause they had popped off but it's still burning oil. The compression check was 160-165 across all 4 so I don't think it's the rings. There is the same amount of soot in the exhaust mani as the downpipe so I don't think it's the turbo. That leaves the intake valve seals. My question is, what tool (brand, part number) works well on the valve springs with the head still on? TIA

Its a pain on the car but can be done. I have a snap on valve compressor tool. I can post it when i get home. Like i said its a pain on the car. If you are going to go through the trouble of doing that you might as well just pull the head and check everything. Just my 2 cents.

I will second this! I changed all of the valve stem seals on my 4G63 DSM with this tool and it was very easy to use. It is much less work then pulling the head.

It's $75 and it's the same tool for DSM and EVO 4G63's. Here is the link: http://www.euroexportinc.com/store/t...ompressor.html

I can't say if stem seals will fix your issue or not, but if you are going to do it on the car then pull the plug out, which you will have to do anyways to hook the air adaptor up, and then stick a screwdriver down the plug hole and turn the engine over by hand until the piston is at top dead. That way, if for whatever reason you push the valve in and let the air out of the cylinder while you're doing the seals, then the valve won't fall all the way into the cylinder, causing you to have to pull the head.

I did the exhaust seals in the car but I used an outdated tool and was pressed for time. Plus, the exhaust valve seals had popped off the guides. That tool looks sweet. Thank you guys for the fast replies.

Bumping this thread because I'm burning oil now - from the sounds of it, it's the valve stem seals.

With the tool listed, how complex of a job is it to change your valve stem seals? (All of them)

You still have to pull the cams out which means you will have to reset the timing. It's not too bad of a job but more then a couple of hours.

+1 on the Eurosport tool. Used it on my old DSM. Make sure to support/hold the valve carefully when using it.

If you are going to do the stem seals, you may as well do cams, springs and retainers, lash adjusters, and timing belt. However if you do not have the budget for all that the tool make this job super easy, but it still take a long time. Expect it to take a whole day.
