What ever happen to Shep working on a 6 spd upgrade?
What ever happen to Shep working on a 6 spd upgrade?
Please forgive me if this is now some sort of common knowledge but I have not owned an evo in 3+ years and last I knew Shep had a stronger 3rd gear or something along those lines he had in a couple of cars for testing however I never heard about the results or if it ever came to be an avl option for sale?
Also wow, these 6 speeds could not be given away a few years back now all of the sudden these are worth more than the 5 speeds

If someone could bring me up to speed I would appreciate it

Here you go. It is available and I think there is a waiting list.

Update: From John himself...
OK, while I have over 100K miles on my lightly modded MR, and the 6 speed still shifts like butter, I have heard about all the failures, and this has worried me...
So, I was extremely excited to hear about Sheptrans upgrades for the 6 speed, and was happy to know that this was an option if/when my trans starts to go.
This was immediately followed by extreme disappointment that it's sold out and no longer available. So I shot an E-mail to John asking if he plans on offering the gearsets, and if so, when, and within 24 hours I got this response:
So there ya go... they will be available in the future... when is a different question.

Yes we do and the order has been placed but the gear company we use is well behind schedule right now. I would prefer to not even attempt at giving an eta right now as it may end up being early next year at this point. We do have a few final drives left in stock though.

I got an email from shep last week. If anyone interested in to look at...
" H Jae,
We always offer a oem type build which starts at $775 but we used to and in the future will again offer the upgraded gear sets and taller final drives again. At 350-400 torque the oem rebuild and keeping up with fresh fluid should be ok and save you a lot of money"
OEM type rebuild sounds isn't that bad.

Yes its true the 5spds handle more torque than the 6spds. But its not about torque for guys like me. Its all about having the right gear available for a miriad of different circumstances. This means the more gears available, the happier i am! It's the whole reason i purchased the MR in the first place!
Now, as you can see with the mileage i have on my car, and being i am on my 2nd act clutch, i am not hard on my transmissions. However if i can have something that will handle more abuse than i am willing to ever throw at it, while it still meets my criteria, then i will take it!
I am not a drag racer, i am a street driver and an autocrosser. The 6 speed fits the bill for me, and i will not ever be changing. So 6spd haters, go away. This is about OUR transmissions and how we are going to make sure they last. we dont care about how many 9 second passes youve done on your 5 speed.
