Boost controllers options
Hi guys
im in the market to buy a boost controller and im just wondering what kind of boost controllers you guys run in your evo with what power and how much psi? I will be looking at buschur racing in line bc, the hallman pro i think its called but what do you guy think run best for you with no problems boost creep, boost spike and so on.
thanks for the input

depends on what u expect from ur car. mbc is very user friendly and effective for controlling boost for the average evo owner. The grimmspeed is a great unit as well but is a little more complicated to set up. Hallman has a great reputation and are loved by many evo owners. I would go for the hallman pro...simple and effective
If you are comfortable using a laptop and ECUflash, I'd recommend using electronic boost control with the factory ECU and a GM 3 port boost control solendoid. This will give you complete control over boost curve by gear, psi and taper, something which is just not possible using a manual boost controller. It won't cost you any more than a manual controller either.
If you are not at ease reflashing your ECU then a MBC is the best option for you. The Hallman works like a champ.
Which ever way you choose to go make sure you retune to your new boost level (don't ask me how I know

If your wanting a MBC, I would recommend the Grimmspeed MBC or the FORGE UNOS.
But the harder decision is weather to go MBC or ECU boost w/ 3port solenoid or even hybrid. That should be the real question.

A lot of people use Hallmans, and they are pretty great. Theres just a couple things I dont like about them.
One is they have no way to know "where your at". They dont have indicator lines or clicks or anything. The grimmspeed had lines and clicks, and the forge click. So you can easily know where you are at and how to get back their ie on my car, old forge would always be 27 psi at 10clicks. So when I changed boost for whatever reason, it was easy to get back.
Next, in my MBC testing, it seemed like the hallman tapered the most. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ed-tuning.html
Last, I never really liked the mounting option of the hallman. The GS and the FORGE have better mounts IMO.
But I have recently have had two different, brand new FORGE UNOS mbcs, act up on me and not be consistent.
So I would have to recommend the grimmspeed over the Hallmans or FORGE.

looks like in that test the Hallman never reached the same boost the others did,so it would be hard to say that it tapered more if it had a lower peak.
it also looks like there may be a small percentage of error in that test procedure as well.i'm not knocking it b/c i surely couldn't do it as well as you did it and i'm glad you did it b/c it is always good to have testing data to look at.thanks btw.

and there may not be any error at all in that testing.it just looked like they all varied a little bit to me.
also i think most people on here use the hallman pro with the steel bb and the strong spring instead of the soft spring and ceramic bb tested.

Also, there was no error in the testing. I took precautions to make the testing as accurate as possible.
Last, I have used many other hallmans then just the one tested. And they all have varied at the same setting and all seem to taper more then other MBCs. The one that was tested, was just the one I could get my hands on at the moment.
But yeah, its just one guys test.

Well look at it like this. Regardless if the Hallman never reached peak boost (except that it did, as I set all the MBCs to 26.9, then took three runs. As you can see the hallman first run is at 26.9), there was still more variation between the hallman runs then any other MBC tested.

i'll take your word for it.it does look like a good test.i guess i'm just trying to talk myself into keeping the Hallman.
when my motor was tuned, the tuner had me buy a Hallman to use instead of the Greddy Profec already being used.
after the tune, the hit 29psi and held to 28psi,granted it was a large turbo.
keep up the testing,we all appreciate it and i am sure it's a thankless job.
