Do I have to drain the coolant to replace the water pump?

Put a pan down. Coolant will come out when you remove the rad hose and pump.

muchas gracias, well it's good to know I won't have to actually drain the coolant, instead just catch some with a large pan

I would drain the coolant from teh radiator first. Nothing worse than pulling the water pump and having coolant go all over your timing pulleys etc.
