Post Is the EVO 8 stoc wastegate Vacuum controled, not boost?

I was curious if our cars come with a vacuum controlled waste-gate, I think some manufactures use boost to operate it? but I can't seem to set the boost controller I bought ( Manual one ) So I look and it looks like the intake ( accordion hose would be the vacuum?

Any links and understanding would be great, I like to know how things works : ]

Is your Evo equipped with a vacuum/boost gauge? What exactly do you mean that you can't set the MBC? The gate is not vacuum controlled. That port on the accordion hose is only used in conjunction with a boost control solenoid(BCS), i.e. the factory ECU/BCS system. You'll need to plug that port(nipple) off when you are using a MBC.

Take a 1&1/2" long piece of 4mm vacuum hose and stuff a fine thread machine screw into one end of that hose cram the other end of the hose onto that nipple use a couple of zipties to secure a tight, no-leak, fit.

Decide whether you want to reference the boost from the IM/DV line or from the compressor discharge tube nipple(j-pipe).

Run a length of 4mm vacuum hose from either boost reference source to the bottom port on the MBC body. This bottom port is in a straight axial line with the knob(diametrically opposed).

Now, run a separate length of 4mm hose from the side nipple on the body of your MBC to the nipple on the top of the wastegate actuator.

It is that simple.

Hmmmm. Sure, go ahead and try it. But, it is plastic. I wouldn't trust that thing myself. There are a number of good MBC's on the market that have been tried and tested on our Evos: For example, you probably can't go wrong with a Hallman Pro, Grimspeed, or Buschur controller.

However, if you must have cheap, then the Dejon Tool MBC that I use is not so bad either. But it costs 70 bucks.

Alright, a few results, I have been quite busy, so time is not always available. The boost controller I am sure is just plain garbage, what I did was adjust the waste gate actuator two turns.

Not sure if it was a good idea because I get a spike to 17 PSI and it drops to about 14.8 in first gear, now if I am on the highway in 5th gear, it spikes to 23 ( I sometimes get engine load cut ) [annoying] so i don't ever get on it anymore, but after about 23 PSI (quick spike ) it will fall back down to a base line of 14.8. It is really annoying. I am going to set the actuator back to the stock position and get a better boost controller.

Guess we'll see what happens, it is just annoying. I bought EVOscan, and id like to run about 22-24 PSI on 93 and 25-27 PSI on e85 with a tune, but we'll see

Before I go for those numbers though I need a few fuel parts, and supporting mods.

Don't set it back to the way it was just yet. Were these WOT runs carried out with the MBC hoses still hooked up, or had you disconnected the MBC hoses and were running instead a single hose directly from the WGA nipple to the nipple on
the compressor discharge J-pipe?

I am curious. Do you know whether your '03 Evo's turbo still is fitted with the stock 9.8 turbine housing, or whether maybe a previous owner swapped it out for a 10.5 cm housing. Also, did you list the exhaust mods done to the car? Are the stock O2 housing, stock DP, and catalytic covertor still on there? Or have they been upgraded? Are you still rocking the stock plastic diverter valve?

I have the stock hoses and solenoid connetced right now, I also have the arm tigher to ahave the boost increased.

These are the mods.
new oem clutch at 95,000 miles
all fluids are redline fluids
rota torque wheels with yokohama tires
russell stainless brake lines
hawk hp+brake pads
samco intercooler couplings with t-clamps
buschur racing turbo back exhaust
B&M short throw shifter
Kartboy solid shifter mounts
Kartboy solid shift cable bushings
JDM side markers
seat lowering brackets
megan racing track coilovers
perrin rear sway bar

The previous owner I do not think changed the wheel at all he said the car is stock, The stock BOV is not there anymore.

Is that BOV set up VTA or recirc? At any rate, if it is VTA and not properly tuned for the diff in metered air then that is part of the problem most likely. Also either the Type S, or the Type R are notrious for leaky and ripped diaphragms.

Its a Recirc of course. I can hold 14.8 fine I feel there is no leak, are there rebuild kits for these? I should do a leak test, I just feel there is something else wrong..
