The OFFICIAL Oil Filter Testing and Results Thread (4G63T/4B11T)
Hello all,
This is an interesting thread! I have a Honda Fit 2009 sport trim and I drive about 22 to 25K a year. I have been using Amsoil oil since 2010 and I do one oil change per year without seeing any adverse effect on the my engine (which still does not burn oil= ie. no need to top it off). Since this thread is about filters, I would like to know what is the best high capacity filter to use. I have used in the past the K&N wrench off filters , the Mobil one performance oil filter and the last three years the Amsoil EAk13 filters.
Both Mobil one and Amsoil claim that their filters can run to 15K (and I push them over that). I m bummed that Amsoil no longer has the EA0 lines of filters for my car that would be for 25K. I am about to change my oil after a year of use (mostly highway) and would like to know what filter I should use? Should I stick with Amsoil EAk13 (made by Champion= lower quality filters) or switch to another brand?
Is it possible to fit a larger filter for my car (one that is not specifically designed for it?
Thanks!

I would be really interested in a UOA on your oil, not to mention seeing what short of shape your filter media is in after 15k+ miles of driving.

I'm not an expert nor do I work in the oil/gas field but if you're going to test the limits on the extended use filters, you might want to stick with any of the synthetic media filters, regardless of manufacturer. Purolator, Amsoil and Royal Purple should be fine for your needs. If you aren't sure, look inside the opening and look for media that is white in color (versus yellow, brown or tan) as all of the synthetic media I have seen has always been white.
As far as size, you need to make sure you find a filter that has a footprint that will form a seal when fully tightened down to the oil filter housing. You will also need to make sure it has the right diameter and thread pitch of the oil filter housing as well. If you look at where the filter sits against the oil filter housing, you can see that there is some room for filters of different diameters:

Hope this helps!
I've run 16k on my daily, with the UOA coming back relatively clean, using amsoil filter and sso 0w20. seems fine, nothing special to note aside from high sodium coming from a dirty air filter. got worse the next time on a shorter interval, but sodium shot up again after that. cleaned out the airbox and switched to a stock filter, going on another 1yr interval to see how the wear holds - car's a corolla with 195k on it.
wouldn't do it on the evo obviously

my oil change indicator on the civic comes up right around 7500mi or so. i change it. Honda engineers know better than i do. not to say i don't go over a bit. i'm changing the oil today after 8k. oops LOL.
i use synthetic in hopes it breaks down less.

Thanks for your answers.
Not sure I am brave but I check for the oil level often and I looked at the spark plugs and they look very clean. I use a K&N serviceable filter and I keep it really clean.
I have not done any oil analysis so I cannot show tangible evidence that I do not damage my engine. mpg still is the same 35-38 mpg calculated depending on my driving (mostly highway and rarely tow). I have now 130000 miles and I hope to get many more. It is possible that the filter by passes after 15K.
I did some research and the only filter that seems to be what the EAO Amsoil filter used to be is the Synlube J20ns. Anyone heard of these? They are fully synthetic (glass) and cost about $24.
Cheers to all and keep the comments coming.
Best.

I have not, but 5μm@95% is quite good. It would be great to see how it stacks up against the other filters I've tested. I'm sure it would do quite well.
Yes, but I would only change the filter once a year. If I change my oil filter every 7500 miles and top off for the oil I have lost when I remove the filter, then it should be the same cost wise... and better for the environment with my method. As long as the car's engine holds up of course as buying a new car would be a lot of waste. Time will tell.
