Was a solution ever devised to eliminate the filter bypass we have on these cars? Sorry if I missed it. I saw for example that AMS had devised a solution for GTR such that there was no longer a filter bypass and a large capacity/high flow filter could be used.

The oil filter bypass is built into the filter. There are stainless steel mesh filters available that do not have a bypass. However, their filtration capability is not as good as elements in standard oil filters.

My guess is that the oil volume be moved at high rpm is too much for a fine filter to handle without creating a huge back pressure, even if the filter were huge. I think most people use the non-bypass filters only for the initial break-in to catch larger debris that may be circulating.
Any thoughts on the ECOGUARD SYNTHETIC+ filters? They claim they filter down to 5 microns.

Nice report on oil filters. I just ran across a brand I never heard of, Renken, which are sold on Amazon and Ebay. They look nice cut open but their specs are vague, like"99% dirt removal power". I can get a dozen of these for $25.50 on Amazon, but want to see better specs. Any info on these?

I had been using the fully synthetic PSL14459 but it looks like that has been discontinued and Purolator rejiggered their product lines. I can't find the old filter at Amazon or anywhere else any longer which makes sense. The new top line is the Purolator Boss and according to them we should be using PBL14461. It looks like the relief valve has the same low value but a 3lb higher high value and the height of the filter is slightly bigger (roughly 1/4") which I don't mind. It still claims to be fully synthetic, hold nearly twice as much dirt (27g vs 15g in the PureOne), uses a PuroSEAL Gasket (ethylene-acrylic), and otherwise similar to the PureOne but I haven't cut one or done any testing / deep research.

You could run a racing filter with no bypass, but you'd need to run a relocation plate or some kind of adapter, as they're usually quite large and with a SAE thread pitch/diameter. Fram does make some with a metric thread pitch. The main purpose of a racing filter is to create a lower pressure drop by using high-flow filter media. Obviously a standard filter is in bypass mode above a certain PSI, so the goal is to get more effective filtration (aka some filtration vs none with a street filter) at the higher pressures seen on the racetrack. I would swap these on at the track and back off before going back to street driving if that's something you do with the car.
