Another Turbo Thread EF3 or BBK-B Ported

Hi Guys,

I'm begging for more power in my car and now trying to decide between EF3 or the BB BBK-B Ported.

I can't seems to find any direct comparison to the BB BBK at the moment, anyone has tried or experience both, what is your thoughts?

At this stage I'm running standard internal with supporting mods, cams etc.

Looking to passed just 400hp on 93 with good possibility of stroking it up in the near future.

Car is mainly daily driven and track at least once a month.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong; EF3 is JB and offer good value for money but the BB BBK-B is equally good with ball bearing. Lots of people leaning towards BB cause they are more robust but after reading a few threads in the forum, the JB in EF3 is very well built and is not lacking anything that BB has to offer. Thoughts?

Thanks Joel

I have a CBRD BBK -3B (ball bearing -B)

I have put 28k miles on it, so it will last,LOL

Also the CBRD JB BBK-ported full I had gave me 420 awhp on 93 and that turbo was in my car for 57k miles and came out with no shaft play.

All I can say is that they are very good turbo's.

My experiences with 3 FP turbos have not been so good and the one Map either, but then again they were not on my car. I was just removing them to replace for others.

Good luck on your choice.

This is really getting harder to choose. EF3 has good review and alot cheaper, best bang for bucks. Anyone one what is their spool characteristic? It is claimed the BBK-3B spool similarly as the BBK Full which is closed to stock Evo 9 turbo, but EF3 and FP Red spool slower?

i would not take a fraction of a section to make my choice. BBK for sure. No personal experience, just looking at dyno graphs, and hearing experiences of friends for years.

I run an FP turbo, but if I was going to drop to a green sized turbo, I'd switch to BBK in a heartbeat.

About 65k miles on the journal bearing BBK Full on my car, running 30psi its whole life, and it is perfect. Makes over 400awhp, so I can only imagine the capabilities of a larger ball bearing version. CBRD and Blouch Turbos FTW

I have the ef3 ported and all options and just under 3700 miles I've seen 27 around 4300 but I have had some slow spool issues and boost loss I had to send the turbo to map to be looked over, so far they have really good customer service I do believe the FP red spools a little faster then the ef3 from what I've read I have no experience with it though.

When you remove it let us know. Sounds like the Wastegate flapper not sealing.

What version of Evo IX do you have, OP? Is it a GSR, RS, MR, or etc.?

It's 9 MR, at this stage I'm leaning towards BBK

I am leaning more toward a BB BBK-Full myself. , I think that no one has a BB BBK-Full yet. Logically, peeps upgrade straight from the original JB BBK-FULL to the more powerful 3B. I checked with Chad, and he has indicated that a BB Full is feasible.

My RS has the JDM RS close-ratio, "short", gearbox, and my present JB Red doesn't even spool until I shift into 4th gear. So, to me at least, achieving instant spool is desired. I want the rate of spool and transients of a TME TiAl turbo....with an additional 30-40 more WHP distributed throughout the upper midrange and the lower topend. I like shortshifting by 6400 RPM.
