Clutches are wear items, lots of heat. One way to combat this is a puck style with a very harsh material. Enter the 6-puck, lasts, grabs like a bear trap and is very light so shifting is a breeze. Most likely will add an a 6-puck to my Evo IX MR once the Street disk gives up the ghost. It also holds MASSIVE amount of torque, well beyond 600 foot pounds which will cover 99% of us.

Bad news? Noisy, can be hard to drive however I can do it as I had a 6-puck in my DSM, it ruled. Tranny breaker for sure if you dump it. That's it.

Twin disks? Those things shift better then stock, noisy however the material on the multi-clutch packs are too thin and don't last. Just search on this site and see how many used twin disks there are. They wear out too fast, that smooth shifting is a lot of slipping before full grab. Yes great for your tranny but the clutch job on an Evo is scary expensive. Do it once, do it right.

The stinky ones i mentioned arent slipping or from slipping. Its just the heat in general makes them smell for a while.

The last twin disk i pulled from my buddies car had 55k miles on it at over 500whp.

I had a 6 puck in my first evo for a while. It grabbed nice, but sucked to drive overall and I got caught in stop/go traffic for two hours. That killed it. Had ~8k miles on it.

Ok so what would you consider 'doing it right' for my application? (Primarily street driven with the occasional trip to the track. 500whp and under 450wtq. Drivability is a big factor)

Single plate clutches are a PAIN in the A$$! the beauty of having the cars we have is because there's enough room in the bell housing that they can have a sprung multi-disc clutch and the drive ability is basically unchanged from stock. until you get into the crazier drag application clutches. i'd rather pull my teeth out with a pair of pliers than put a single disc clutch in my Evo. THOSE are harsh. it's like a damn ON/OFF switch.

good luck with that crap. I wouldn't waste my money. In fact i won an exedy stage 2 single disc for the evo vs sti shootout and i sold it. so even if i had one given to me... still worthless.
Don't know if you read my post but I've had multiple exedy clutches And am not a fan. I'm gonna guess you're like 80% of the people on these forums that does a lot of drag racing. What single plate clutches have you driven and what about them didn't you like?

I have been driving on a qm-8 leg for close to a year and have just about 10k miles on the car and close to 100 launches at the track with it. I will say the first week that I had it in my car, I was seriously wondering wtf had I put in the car. After I learned it quirks and how to drive on it, I am extremely happy with it. I plan on having my transmission rebuilt this spring when the motor is getting built and I will have ER measure the disks to see what kind of life I have taken off of them. Either way, I plan on installing another set of disks when the time comes for the rebuild.

QuarterMaster. Smoothest engaging clutch I've ever felt and you don't ever have to worry about the retainer clip separating from the throw out bearing. I've driven, exert, Tilton, quartermaster, carbonetics, act etc and the quartermaster has great pedal pressure and no worries about the clip popping out. Exedy is a good choice as well but I'd say the quartermaster.

So ive been doing a lot of reading and am really considering just rebuilding my triple. The car has a built tranny and t-case and I feel like thats a waste without a good clutch... I would love to run a 10 second pass this summer! I want something that can hold up to some launches and dont know if the comp stage 2 will hold up to that. Anyone else with some input???

Well, rebuilding is definitely te cheapest way for the power you intend to have to clutch ratio.

Right now my options are either rebuild the triple or buy a QM 8 leg.....
