Best Cam Setup??

Heys guys this has probably been asked before but im looking at getting some cams for my evo but not sure what setup i should get. Im looking at either the HKS 264/272 setup or the HKS 272/272 setup. I got perrin 3" downpipe and cat delete pipe with HKS Carbon Ti Exhaust. At that same time when i order the cams i will get HKS Cam gears and HKS intake with Apexi S-AFC II. My goal is to get the most HP i can out of the stock turbo so what cam setup do you guys think would be the best? I have seen dyno charts showing that the 272/272 setup makes like 1HP more but makes like 10ft/lbs less of torque then the 264/272 setup. Does that sound right?? The test was done on a 4G63 turbo engine with stock turbo. Anyway hope to hear your guys thoughts on the matter.

If you plan on keeping the stock turbo, I'd go with the 264/272 combo. I'm running this setup at -3 with my Vishnu Stage 1+. If you're planning to upgrade your turbo, 272/272's might save you some money in the future.

Thanks guys. With the 264/272 setup do you notice big difference in top end power? I have looked at the works and they are a option but they still havent sold me on them yet. This is my everyday driver so thats why i plan on keeping the stock turbo for awhile i have my 200sx for drag racing so i just want my evo to have good HP and im gonna set it up for autocross. Anyway another question would be what ecu upgrade is the best with the 264/272 setup?

Thanx Agian!

I wanted to the same thing - to max out the stock turbo.

Let me tell you after installing 264/272 cams and cam gears, the car freaking rips. It really wants to rev from 4 to 7k and beyond. And it feels so smooth now. I really think the cam timing was everything. Set your gears to -3/-3 or even -2 and you will notice a big difference in top end power with your cams.

For the best ECU upgrade you say, Id check out the Xede. The baseline maps for cams is so strong its crazy. And you have your pick between 91 or 100 octane. With the 100 octane map youll be looking at 400bhp or 350 whp on a dynojet.

Check out AMS' tech article on cams at http://www.automotosports.com/cam_test.asp

They dyno test different cams. They use an older DSM with a 16G. They test Web Cams, HKS, JUN and Crower cams.

I'm happy with the XEDE. Vishnu's tuning is done with the stock airbox intact. If you plan on keeping the HKS intake, you might want to check out the AEM setup. They had some issues with the early release, but I think the bugs have been worked out. If you can live without the HKS Suction kit, the XEDE is easy to work with.

The cams make the car feel like it can just keep on pulling. I don't feel any power drop off up to the rev limit. My car made 320whp with 94oct and cat installed. Other Vishnu Stage 1+'s were making 335whp with test pipe and race gas mix. Do you have 93/94 oct in Washington?

No problem running the XEDE with the HKS intake. Just confirm that everything is okay on the dyno. If not, just make the necessary mapping changes to the fuel map. FWIW, the last Stage 1+ car we dyno'd on an AWD Dynojet, running race gas and a test pipe put down 360whp which seems to be the limit of the factory turbo on most cars. This car was running a 264/272 combo. I think the dyno at Altered Atmos reads substantially lower than the other AWD dynojets (Pruven, Turbotrix, Turbochargers.com, ATP, HKS, K&N) we've used.

Cheers,
shiv
