Evo 7 GTA Turbo/Cams Help.

Hey guys new here so any help will be amazing thanks.

I have a EVO 7 GTA with an Exhaust, Fuel Pump, Air filter . Im looking to upgrade the turbo my tuner said its the next step to get a good amount of power. Im looking at a Tomei Arms M7960 (costs slightly more then a stock 9 turbo and comes with a full install kit.) Reason I am leaning towards this turbo is because here in Australia it runs for about 1500-1600 where as BBK lites and the like are about 2200-2500 so with that price difference I can get cams as well was my thinking. Im just wondering if getting cams done with the turbo is the best way to go or will cams not make a huge difference?. Was looking at GSC S1 cams. Im hoping to make 200awkw will these 2 get me there?.

Thanks again and sorry if this is covered in other threads I did try and look but I know USA did not get GTA's so is not much floating around.

S1 cams sound like a good choice, another good one would be HKS 264.
I think that the Tomei is going to be a bit laggy being a non BB turbo with an auto tranny Evo. I suggest a near stock sized turbo. GT-a has a smaller turbo than other Evos, so using a 10.5 hotside turbo from other Evos would be a significant improvement.

Thanks for the reply Foxbat

From what I have seen The Tomei spools roughly the same as a stock 9 with a bit more mid/up top and its only $100 more and comes with the install kit. If theres something else out there im more then happy to check it out. Whish we got the same prices Americans did would be amazing!

If anyone has a decent turbo in mind roughly in the Tomei price range (not looking for huge numbers just a decent bump with decent spool up time) I would love to know!

Thanks again.

It's advertized as near stock in response but it's not! I've tuned 4 cars with a Tomei, it's very close in spooling & high power to the old non-bb FP green. Overall it's a good turbo & would reach full boost relatively fast, but it's going to feel lazy in spooling especially with an auto-tranny.
If you are looking for such mid sized turbo, I'd high suggest a ball bearing design such as the new FP green.
I've tuned a GT-a last year, the transmission is geared for high speeds, so, it lacks that low end power, thus I suggest a stock Mitsuibishi turbo with a titanium compressor wheel, (9MR, 6.5) its fast spooling would compensate for high ratio final gear & it has larger hot side & compressor than the stock GT-A turbo so it would provide more mid/up top power.

Thanks again. Great info might hunt around and see if I can find the turbo your talking about. The new FP green goes for about 2.5k here which is a bit on the pricey side for me right now. Might just stick to a Stock 9 or the MR if I can find one here then.

Thanks alot .

you would need larger injectors (around 1000cc) I recommend that you install aftermarket head studs if you're planning more than 25psi boost.
GT-a rom is different than other Evo roms, let me know if you need any help when you tune the car.

Is that the injectors + headstuds if I want to run over 25? Im not really looking to go over 25 hoping between 20-25 gets me there.

Larger injectors are a must with the larger turbo or you won't be able to go past 15!
Have you already upgraded your fuel pump?
I recommend that you install headstuds for the peace of mind, you will run higher boost/load than stock & your engine is like 11 years old.
What boost control are you planing to use?

Hmm I didnt relise I needed them will have to speak to my tuner thought they would have mentioned it ill bring it up thanks .

I have an upgraded fuel pump yes. Head studs seem like a smart idea to .

Now heres a stupid question about the boost controller. MY stock boost SOLENOID broke and I had an aftermarket one installed is that the boost controller or is there something else?

If you have installed a quality solenoid then your tuner should be able to set boost to the desired level through the ecu, but you won't have any control over it. Some tuners attache a switch to the solenoid enabling you of having two possible boost levels, like 15 & 25.
Other options you have are to install an electronic boost controller (EBC) you'd be able to set boost to any desired level through a digital control panel. 2nd is manual boost control (MBC) small simple valve that allows to increase/decrease boost.

Here is my 2 cents:

I have this turbo with a stock motor, I have it HKS EVC set to KPA 120, this turbo hit it after 5K RPM WOT on 3rd.

Now this could be my stock setup or the turbo being slow.

In HK we have 98 RON gas, I think is the same in Aus right?

You won't need headstuds if running 98 mate.
Keep the tune clean and you'll be fine.
