Evo 4 transfer case, can it be modified?

As a straight swap, no.
An evo8 transfer will bolt to any evo4-9 gearbox as will an evo4 transfer.
However the height of the output of the transfer cases are different.
Evo4-6 transfer cases have the output down low, evo7-9 have it up high.
So if you interchange them they will just hit the subframes.
I don't know if you can mix and match different bits of the casings, but the internals of the 7-9s are slightly larger than evo4-6s.
