In need of definitive info regarding building a Mivec 2.1L 4G64...

What is required to build a 2.4L 4G64 shortblock for use with a Mivec Evo IX cylinder head? So far, I understand these things are needed:

-A proper 4G64 Block.
-An 88mm stroke Evo 8/9 crank.
-A Mivec oil feed line.

What are the water pump options? What about the oil pump? What size connecting rods (156mm or 162)? What about the pistons? Do the pistons have to be specially made with the wrist pins moved up 6mm? What head gasket should be used?

Thanks!

156mm rods. Any stroker style piston can be used but make sure they will fit the cylinder bore. You can use your stock water pump with a spacer that's like $20.

Okay...now we're getting somewhere. :-) What exactly is a stroker piston?

Wow.

Okay, so definitive information-

Evo IX needs an Evo IX waterpump, not an 03 outlander which is reputed to work on an Evo 8. Since I have had the factory pump here and looked I doubt that one still. Using a spacer is a bad idea as they can leak. Even the ones that dont leak can suck the impeller into the spacer and chow it up. Buy a modified waterpump or have your brand new or nearly brand new waterpump modified. If its not nearly brand new you need to buy a new one and then have it modded.

MIVEC line kit

With 156mm rods you need a standard 2.4 piston in the compression of your choice. You would only use a "stroker" piston if it were a 162mm rod.

Exhaust cam gear

Build as normal but I think you would be happier overall with a 2.0L rather than spending all the money on a 2.1 that is still touchy on the headgasket unless done right.

What is wrong with using the outlander pump? I have over 7,000 miles on my 2.4L at 552awhp with out a single over heating issue. This is with a mivec head. Another friend of mines has about 1,000 miles on his 2.4L with an Evo 8 head with out any issues with an outlander water pump?

What would you recommend for a head gasket? I am having my block O-ringed.

Thanks

It didnt line up correctly with the rest of the pulleys and it doesnt have the alternator bracket boss on it unless you arent talking about the 2003 Outlander pump that has the factory part number of 1300A069?

Yes the 069 is the one I was talking about. It is close to a 1/16" inset from where the stock pulley sits, and you do need to trim down the upper left bolt boss on the evo8 applications for the alternator bracket. Also, it does not have the bolt boss for the alternator bracket on the evo9, however so long as nobody trimmed the upper part of that bracket it still bolts to the IM.

We both made our own alternator brackets. I dont know what part number it is. All i know is that its a GMB brand and its for an 03 outlander. It lined up with the rest of the pulleys without any issues.

Can you please explain what is needed to get the headgasket to seal on these 2.4L motors?

Thanks

Thank you everyone for your help. Especially JohnBradley.

In regards to the head gasket: What is the best option? Use a 4G64 gasket?
