Transmission Problems..3rd Gear Grind
Transmission Problems..3rd Gear Grind
Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and to evo's in general. I just bought a 2003 evo and I bought it online which I didn't want to do but I got way too good of a deal to pass it up. Anyways..Once in awhile I will get a 3rd gear grind, obviously it is more common when the car is cold but it does still happen sometimes when the car is warm. Here's the thing, when I double clutch while shifting it never grinds which is why I'm pointing towards clutch. Maybe just need to bleed it? The car has the original clutch with 115k. I can hear some throw out bearing noise when the clutch is not engaged but never slipped on me. Just curious before I buy a new clutch and tear apart the tranny and replace the syncros.
If it grinds only one gear I doubt it is the clutch.
Mitsubishi doesn't seem to be able to produce a transmission that will always shift perfectly. New, my car had a bit of a grind in the 1-2 or 2-3 shift (I'd have to go drive it to be sure which) and it is still there, no better, no worse after 10 years.
What I'd recommend you do is fill the transmission with the best oil available and that, in my opinion, is 6-speed Diaqueen. If that is not enough of a fix then time to send it off. You soon will have the transmission out anyway for a clutch.

I recently put some amsoil in the transmission to see if that would help at all and it didn't make much of a difference, but after doing more and more research it seems like a lot of people have a slight grind. Might as well send it over to TRE to have the rebuild done.
