Evo 8 MR Enclosed Air Box and Intake Options

Hi guys,

This is my first post after buying an Evo 8 MR earlier this year. The car has been fantastic but I would like to throw on a bunch of bolt-ons and get a tune, one of those mods being an air intake.

In Australia the laws are that the air intake needs to be enclosed. I'm considering the HKS RS or the Perrin intake and I don't see these fitting in the stock airbox. I've tried searching for the info but haven't had much luck on intake/airbox combos and have come across a lot of mixed information.

If I ran with the Perrin air intake what would be an airbox that would be compatible with the intake (so that it's fully enclosed)? My preference would be an airbox with a snorkel like OEM so that you're sucking in cooler air rather than hotter engine bay air.

Pretty much got all the other mods figured out but this air intake choice has been the toughest. Any thoughts would be great! Thanks in advance.

You can try the Malibujack air box mod, but that is mostly just a visual hack not and actual way to get an aftermarket filter to fit.

The fp 84 tube I believe fits with the stock airbox. Then there is a variety of Kansai air boxes that would work with your choice of filter adapter. - in addition to the tube

I think that is the cleanest option

Thanks guys. I've had a look at the Kansai Carbon Air Box for the Evo 8 but it's been discontinued. Searched everywhere online to source one but have been unsuccessful. Do you know of any places that still sell them? There's a guy in Aus who makes Kansai copies (they look the same except they're not carbon fibre) but I'd prefer the real thing.

So are there any airboxes you guys know of that fit the Perrin intake?

I was planning on doing some extensive cutting to try and make the stock airbox as close to stock looking as possible.

The Perrin intake tube is too long and pushes the foam filter almost up against the reservoir. That means you will need to cut the side of the OEM air box to allow the filter to protrude out the side. No one has done this mod yet, but it's been on my list of things to do after I put in my Perrin intake.

FP's 84mm intake pipe wont work. It only fits on their compressor housing.

Your best bet might just be the Malibujack mod. The Kansai has been discontinued for awhile. Unless you find it used.

you could run a stock KN replacement filter and cut the top out of the stock box leaving the rim to hold it down , so its open air thru the top, or cut the rt side out of the top of the box for increased flow from the cold air side. Running a divider with the top cut off would block hot air and give you what you want. my .02

The Australian company that makes Kansai replicas in fiberglass w/ or w/o carbon applique are good quality.

Also Arnside Motorsport in the UK sell carbon fiber Kansai replica kits for open class Evos set up with SD.

The box install and getting it to work with your intake is quite a headache though, especially if you are on MAF.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm going to get the Kansai copy box and stick an HKS RS in there!

I've heard mixed things about the HKS RS but I guess as long as you change the filter regularly it should be sweet.
