Unhappy boost

OK i am new here but i built a 350 whp 91 eclipse. and i am a member of the dsmtalk.com web site. but, that not my evo site so now i come to the modding gods of evos. For i no longer own the past.

My problem is I installed a phantom autometer boost gauge off the fuel pressure solioniod like the evo. tech site recomends and i am only reading 12 lbs of boost. what gives could it be a faulty wastegate???

I also did the egt install and at 120 mph wot is 1400 deg. And average is 900 to 1200 any othertime.

do you have an A/F gauge in your car, are the EGT's Fahrenheit or Celsius?

welcome to Cub Less-boost-than-the-manufacturer-claimed. My evo hits a whopping 15 lbs of boost. When I talked to the dealership I left in disgust.

just add a boost controler, it will hold 20psi till redline if set up correctly

you could have a leak in one of your intercooler hoses. tighten them all.

OR, it could be the gauge. Road Race thinks that theyre complete crap. Ive personally seen at least a handful of problems with them myself, not on the EVO though.

And his temp reading HAS to be farenheit, if it was celsius, he wouldn't have an engine anymore.

good call on both accounts alex. Unfortunately I've verified the boost gauge on my gsx, and double checked the intercooler pipes and pressure tested the system.

You might have a leak somewhere in your pressure source line for your gauge. Did you happen to check your stock boost soleniod? 12 psi is the spring strength of the wastegate. There might be something wrong with your factory boost control system. You should check all of those lines to make sure that it is working properly. For your EGT, you might be seeing low egt temps because of the low boost.

Mine runs 1.35 - sometimes 1.39 bars (~20psi) of boost with stock ECU, and a 3 " catback. Before it tapers down at 6000 rpms

Thumbs down

ok i did find that the line for the boost was kinked but none the less it spikes to 15 and drops to 12/13 psi.

i won't rule out the gauge at all yet but i do find it a bit weird that i am not the only one with probs. like this. you know a $35,000 car should be more accurate. And sorry for all who has ever paid the mark ups
which made your ride even more

i just wanna clear this psi problem up before i start messing with the boost. i am not sure if anyof you have ever hit fuel/boost cut before but it sux . thought i lost my motor/tranny all at one on the eclipse.

thanks for the help and anymore tips i am all ears. and are there any free mod for this beast yet. like restrictors, honeycomb crap like that?

Try tapping closer to the intake manifold, you will get a more accurate reading. You need all the help you can get with that Autometer gauge.

did you tap the line going from the intake manifold to the FPS???...if not, then T there.....I read 19 to 20 psi, tapering off to around 17 stock.

ok i tried there too and still the same .

So you guys say that this isn't uncomon to read low boost ressure before installing a controler?

I will try the gauge swap tonight and see if thats the prob. but i don't realy think it is i ran phantom before and the radings were alway right on . so it seemed 19 to 20 psi on the eclipse with the 16g turbo.

Thumbs up

OK getr this i went to the dealer and told them i am only getting 14 lbs of boost now that i changed the the vac. hoses to blue and i should be getting a 19 spike and 16 normal. they knew nothing of this for there book says the car is supose to run at 7.6 up to 11.2 so me running 15lbs it great so they would't touch a thing??????????????????????????

so what do you guys think. i will be ofcoarse adding a manual boost control. any tips on a good duel stage. there are a few brands and i see the price varies does the quality suffer on the lesser priced ones????
