Driveline Clunk??!?!??!?

im just wondering is this is normal... Any time i get in an out of the gas i get a CLUNK basically like the sound of some play in somthing then it catching up. Should i see my dealer about this??? If i do see my dealer should i reverse my K&N intake mod so they dont try to void my warranty for it???

Hi,

Are you in the correct gear for the speed you are going? If so, you should not be hearing a loud "clunk" with fast or slow throttle changes. Is it loud?

I hear a light clunck once awhile when I shift. I have over 10K miles and drive it hard here and there. No problem yet. When I start driving my car, the clutch chatters but goes away once warmed up. Evo drive train is one of the toughest out there but it also makes lots of noise and so on. It should last a long time as long as we don't abuse it.

if its anything like the GSX eclipse's and the VR4's it would be the 3 piece driveshaft slapping around in the bearing.

One of the best trouble shooting methods is to ride in another Evo or have the other owner ride in yours. Most of these bump and thunk questions can be quickly filtered down to either mine does the same thing or get it to your dealer.

And the service manager I use told me he would not void a warranty based upon an intake or exhaust. A boost controller and fooling with AFR is another matter. But your dealership may not share the same opinion.

i actually dont have any fellow evo friends. The closest evo owner to me is about 30 mins away and i found him on this forum. I actually have not even met the guy yet. Hopefully i will be able to trouble shoot like that. But it is nice to know that my intake wont void my warranty! everything seems fine coming in and out of the throttle when its at a decent rpm this is just mostly a low rpm slop. Im guessing its just because there isnt much tension on the drivetrain at the time and it slops back and forth a bit....

You seem a little too knowledgeable to actually lug the engine. If you are joking around, why don't you actually think up something original and funny.

It happens on mine too...AFTER, a local 'supposedly' PRO garage put in my new clutch... although they say its not their fault and has nothing to do with it... i dont want to point fingers because there is still doubt and no proof...

Happens usually in 3rd or 4th gear....

I have been told.. too much engine braking... follow these rules:

1) Use the gears to accelerate
2) Use the brakes to slow down
3) Use gears to slow only in emergencies..

Apparently, too much engine braking puts too much strain on the trannies.. including the propeller shaft.. which is the object of the discussion... which sounds reasonable.. but my question is why immediately only after the clutch change?
