transmission question...
Hey guys,
this may sound like an odd question, but do you have resistance when you shift gears, or not?? I drove a red evo for 3 weeks, and that car's shifts were very smooth, and had no almost no resistance. I got a new silver evo, and I've noticed that the shifter feels more "mechanical" than the previous shifter. As I shift, I have to put more pressure to get into gears than the red one, which I literally just slipped through whichever gear I wanted. I'm wondering if this is unusual (in either case), or if there's a logical explanation like the bushings or something. Neither stick has any bad sign of grinding (the silver one actually does have a slight amount of feedback sometimes as I get into third...but nothing too dramatic).

Hi and welcome!
I'm assuming from your post that your car is new? Your transmission will get smoother with mileage and mine was exactly as you described untill 3 or 4 hundred miles.

PS If the car has more than 500 hundred miles then you might want to change fluids.

Right on - Thanks! My car is new...has about 250 miles right now. It just kind of trips me out, because I had the red one (it went to auto shows, so maybe a lot of people messed with it), and the stick shifted AMAZINGLY smooth. But I just picked up this silver one a week ago, and the stick feels amazingly stiff. Like I said, it doesn't feel bad, just much more rigid/resistant. Your answer does make some sense though. I guess I'll just have to be patient. Any input on the shifts to third? It's not audible or anything, but maybe every few times that I shift into third (rpms less than 4-5k), I get a small bit of vibration from the shifter...is this just something that will break-in too? I'm just guessing that the syncros maybe need a little wear too. I've read the boards, and notice people have mentioned changing their tranny fluid - do you do this at a shop, or is it easy enough to do in garage? Thanks again!
My silver Evo is doing exactly what yours is doing. I have 1700 miles and still doing the samething. I just got the fluids, and will change them soon. Hopefully that will take care of it. I'll let you know.
Your third gear shifts sound as if all the gears are not breaking in at the same rate, which you would expect. Also, our cars require the clutch to be all the way to floor for a smooth shift if not rev matching. The clutch releases at the top which makes it difficult to launch and shift quickly.
Changing fluids is not hard and I would recommend you have a experienced tech or tuner do it the first time while you watch. I'm not recommending changing fluids unless you really feel the notchiness getting worse over time. There are of course some owners who drained their new car when they got home and re-filled with their favorite trans or diff oils.

Man you are by far the most helpful moderator on this forum! You have helped me on numerous occasions! Thanks for not following suit of some your counter parts and keep up the good work!

after driving over a dozen different Evos I have found that some just "feel" better than others. The shift quality is buttery smooth in some , and horrible in others. There is no true explanation to this, and although fluids may help the machanical aspect of this problem is still there. I completely rebuilt my tranny with new gears and synchros and found the shifting to be much better than before, but not as good as others. I know for sure that bearing clearances is not the problem as some tuners speculated, but im certain MItsu is well aware of the problem and will most likely be corrected completely by the next model year.

Try 3 qts of "GM Synchromesh" for a trans fluid change. You wont believe the difference! It's semi-synthetic and about $9 per qt from any GM dealer. Great stuff. Doesn't make the tranny any less noisy though, just VERY smooth.
