Rear diff lock

Has anyone had issues with rear LSD locking? I'm running AMS oil severe gear without any LSD additive in my diff and it seems to be locking up on me. I'm hoping its as simple as an oil issue. Also, is anyone running Acdelco Synchomesh manual tranny oil? Ever since I've changed to AMS oil ive been getting gear whine. It gets very cold where im from and I'm thinking the AMS oil might be to viscous...
Thanks again for all your help.

idk about evo 5's but in 8/9s if you run damn near anything but oem you either smoke the plates or the bearings...

I don't really have any answers for you, but just as a by the way, it's "Amsoil", not "AMS oil". Has nothing to do with the company AMS.

Isn't it the t-case that's very picky? From what I recall reading, the rear diff seems to be more tolerant to fluids other than OEM.

Where's an AMSOIL representative when you need one.

Ive tried the ac delco synchromesh for the tranny. It was ok, but out of all the fluids I have tried on my evo, the redline cocktail has been the best. Id ditch the ac delco and run this or run what TRE recommends on that link posted above, hint oem or redline

Yes and no. I firmly believe my premature wear to my rear diff was due to experimenting on a certain manufacturers fluids. Im not gonna say here, but I shouldn't have run it anyways because its not on TRE's recommended fluids, even though this was a GL-5 synthetic.

Ive experimented with running different fluids in the trans when I first purchased the evo and its been more tolerant than my rear diff, go figure.

I tried some other oils in my rear diff and smoked it in a weak.., luckily sheps diff upgrade is cheap as hell... Since the rear diff is a clutch pack it requires fluids without friction modifiers and other common additives... The tcase will happily take motul, redline, shockproof, and a few other oils... But the rear diffs clutches will tear themselves up if the oil isnt right... If i were you i'd buy a gallon of oem oil, drain the diff, fill it, spin the tires to circulate it, drain that out, fill it back up with clean fluid, drive it around the block, drain it and fill it back up again... Hopefully it will correct itself and not to much damage has occurred...

If it's stock, this is true. If it's been upgraded, depending on who and what was done, you can get away with some modifiers to help with lock-up.

Don't listen to this guy and put anything other than Daiqueen in your Transfer Case.

There are countless threads on people switching to another fluid because they think it's better than what is recommended and then they post threads on EvoM crying about, "Why did my TC get the death whine!?"

Both Jacks Trans and TRE recommend Redline Shockproof in the T-case, its what I've been running for the ~1000 autox runs my car has. Just had it rebuilt by Jack's and R/P were perfectly good to reuse.

Well, if it works for you and these builders recommend it then it's probably fine.

I've seen lots of issues with people running other **** in their TC.

YMMV

Definitely, I wouldn't just go to Autozone and pick any diff fluid. T-case is pretty finicky and really need both the right stuff, and the right amount.

Ive run both the NS and regular Redline diff fluid as per Jon at TRE. The NS stuff is without friction modifier and gives a bit more lock and a lot more noise. The regular (forget the weight) is a ton better for noise and still has a plenty of lockup out of corners.

So you running the rear diff without friction additives--well, its going to do what its supposed too and that is lock. Go get some LSD fluid additive and put it in--if you want do it a little at a time until you get what you want.. or switch to Diaqueen that already has it added. Simple fix! Since it came up in other posts--dont run anything other then Diaqueen in the transfer case, its real expensive. I can attest to doing it and it dont work, 2500 mls later and I had a new case.

Speaking with the guys at Shep Transmissions they only recommend DiaQueen in the T-Case. They recommend DiaQueen or Redline in the rear diff but other oils with the same properties may work fine. Being that my diff has Limited slip, If i simply add an LSD additive it should solve my lock up problem. They recommend Redline MT90 for the Transmission. The key is to use GL-4 manual transmission fluid because GL-5 fluids are corrosive to brass and that's what my syncho`s are made out of. I live in northern Canada and don't have access to a Mitsubishi dealer. I have a DiaQueen shipment on the way but my T-case has a very loud gear wine. We shall see if it will last or if my drive train will be getting shipped out for overhaul...
Thank you for the advise and input its very help full.
