I stripped a valve cover bolt thread

Hey all i was changing my plugs and upon install i seemed to have stripped a thread reinstalling my coilpacks its this exact one ( and yes i was using a torque wrench 17 in-lb)

Well the thread is gone i can get thing bolt in there just a bit tighter than hand tight and all the other bolts are tight so there is no movement in the coilpack

Now to my question should i leave it as it? Should i drill out the Valve cover and tap it or should i helicoil it?

I've never tapped anything in my life and nor do i own a tap set should i jsut cut my loses and take it to a shop and get them to helicoil it?

If it makes any difference im thinking of buying a SpoolinupCop in the next few weeks anyway so will that bolt even be needed?

Cheers in Advance

i have stripped in two places each by coilpacks.since there's 3 bolts holding each coilpack i left it like that and no problems.

^LOL poor guy...one of these days...

If I were you I would buy a tap and dye set and helicoil it. Remove the vc and drill and tap it. It's not that hard so as long are you take your time and are very careful you'll be fine.

As for switching to a COP I'm not exactly sure but I think that is one of the two mounting bolts that are needed to mount the plate. If you're planning on purchasing one soon maybe you can hold off until you get it and check to see if that bolt is required. If it is then obviously you'll need to fix the threads and if not then you'll be good to go.

Tapping the valve cover is not going to be very hard at all. I think the most difficult part in some instances* is trying keeping the metal shavings from falling-but you can take the valve cover off. Also, like "egis" said, there is more than one bolt holding the coil on.

this is correct, that's one of the standard bolt holes for securing the plate

What would the helicoil part number be to use the oem bolts. I need to do this too. Too many spark plug changes and finally wrecked almost all the threads.
