stripped bolt on valve cover

Hey guys-

I stripped out the threads in one of the holes that holds the coilpack onto the valve cover on my evo IX. I know that the valve cover is magnesium, but is there a way to helicoil it to restore the threads or put some type of thread restorer on there?

Anyone know an easy fix besides replacing the valve cover. Preferably keeping it on while I do it?

Hey,

You could helicoil it, or you can drill it out to make the hole just slightly larger, then tap it and use a larger screw.

I don't think there is a ton of material there but it would be easier than helicoiling it (especially if you've never done it before).

That threading isn't part of the valve cover, but the head itself:

As Bink mentioned above, you'll probably have to helicoil it or drill it and tap it.

Are you sure the one that the green line is going to isnt just part of the valve cover? It looks like the one in the head is the part that actually bolts the valvecover down. The part that stripped is the part that holds just the coil down onto the VC. I guess thats what I get for being in a rush changing my plugs

I could be wrong, but I thought it was a pretty long bolt that went through the valve cover and threaded into the head.

I'll check the FSM or ASA tonight when I get home.

That bolt only threads into the valve cover, not the head. Just helicoil it.

What size is the bolt and thread pitch of the coil pack bolt? So I can buy helicoil?

I've got two stripped out...a bolt on each of the stock coils, I'll be using a helicoil.

Helicoils used in soft metals will be way stronger than before so that's the way to go.
