Evo 8 Knocking/Ticking Noise..Help!!!

Help!! This noise started on my way home from out of town and I for the life of me cannot find where its coming from. Car still starts and runs great and no metal shavings in the oil.

Here is a link to the video of the noise -

Thanks in advance...

Since you have the timing cover off, ill assume you have already checked the timing marks to make sure the cams didnt jump a tooth. You might have a stuck lash adjuster, there is a procedure for cleaning them using diesel fuel. At any rate you are probably going to want to pull off the valve cover to see whats going on in there.

So far I have pulled the valve cover and while having someone cranking the car I watched the movement of all the rockers and lifters and checked for broken valve springs, everything looked good and moved fine. I also unhooked the rear balance shaft belt to eliminate a spun bearing. I also pulled the oil pan looked for brass or shavings and found none. While I was in there I pulled all the rod caps off hardly any to no wear on the bearings and the sound seems to be coming from the top end.

If I was you, I would start pulling the lash adjusters and cleaning them. Make sure to bleed them out before re-installing them back into the head, and dont forget to line up the holes for the oil with the oil passages in the head. Gunked up lash adjusters is a super common issue with these motors, and since you have ruled so many other things out it makes sense to give it a try. They sell a special tool for compressing the springs to remove the rockers, or there is a screw driver method you can find on youtube.

Side note, if you havent already, go to youtube and search for 4g63 lifter tick and see how those sounds compare to yours.

Did you check for a bent rod when you pulled the pan? Sure sounds like that to me.

+1, I have a lifter tick. The sound is closer together(more rapid if that makes sense). Kind of like a injector opening and closing rapidly. GL
