knock

My mods are buschur intercooler pipe, maf air pipe, hks evc 4 boost controller, and super afc II w/ buschur setting. Still got the stock exhaust system. Anyway my knock readings are extremely high. When I'm at wot it jumps up to 54, the highest I've seen is around 200 something. I'm in south dakota and they only have 91 octane. What readings are considered to be safe? Thanks for any help.

Hi,

I'm assuming you SAFC settings are confirmed to be for 91 octane gas. Try this thread for additional information and make sure you have set up the knock function correctly on your SAFC. Hope this helps.

your counts are 54 knock sums? The highest you've seen is 200 knock sums? Is that what your referring to when u say knock..... If so those numbers are WAY too high, the counts i'm under the impression of that are said to be too high are double digits, more towards the 15-20 range or higher..... Some knock is ok but when it becomes consistant and too high then it will cause major problems...

To try and help solve your problem i'd ty and get some 93-95 octane gas and retune the safc and see what you get... Should clear up the issue

PS how much boost are you running?

That's just barely being seen by the ECU. It will lose a little timing with that much knock. I regularly get 180-200 in the top of the rev range, but i'm starting to think that's some engine noise coming from somewhere.

200 is about the max knock you want to see. In realilty, i'd richen it up up top 1-2% and see if that helps. But, just so you know, 150-200 is the general accepted limit as described by Buschur and such people. You aren't going to destroy anything on 200 knock count. You're just gonna lose a little power since the computer is pulling a little timing to stop the knock.

Angry Car is knocking!!! (MERGE)

Hey tuners,

I was just wondering if some of you experienced tuners could help me figure this out. Is it normal to see some knock when you are boosting up to 20psi to redline? My knock sensor is showing a steady 15 after running it for a while. Is this considered normal, or should I drop the boost down a bit? When the boost was set at 19psi I was hardly ever getting a reading but not as much power. What should I do?

Here are my mods:
2003 Evo 8 ,turboback, hi-flow cats, mbc set to 20, aem intake, s-afc2.

With the s-afc reading it is totally normal to see knock reading as it is not a true knock detector. My s-afc sometimes goes up to 80 on the reading but I have no way of realy acctually telling if it is pinging. if you are rely worried about it get a data logger and you will be able to tell if the knock is true or just a vibration from the engine.

Agree with Quickshift, datalogger is the way to go. Easy to note knock by looking a timing retard under WOT. That SAFC function is a gimic IMO.
