Letting You In On The Secret.... Face-Platted Transmission

No, its not a full dog-box because these gears are not straight-cut gears.

However, they will take your transmission and take your factory gears and face-plate them. This means they remove the synchs and replace those with "dog rings" or whatever you want to call them.

In short, it will make your trans shift like a dream at high RPM. No more lock-out in a drag race situation. This is for those who are serious about racing, but don't want to spend $10k on a Sheppard Dog Box. This is a much cheaper alternative.

Yes, the car can be driven on the street. I wouldn't recommend it for a daily driver, but for a weekend warrior? No problem. Years ago I had a Fox body Mustang with a Liberty face-platted TKO trans and drove it on the street on weekends.

Going to their website you won't find anything right now about Mitsubishi Evo transmissions, but I know for a fact they are doing them now.

Good call letting the masses in on it but for the drag racers I feel like this is already known lol I've had a lot of DSM friends with face plated trannys and a few friends just do the 1-2 on an Evo

This has been around for a few years in the Evo community. Most only do 1st and 2nd gear. They now can do 1 threw 5.

My only concern is your still limited to the factor gear strength.

For DSM's that's still a big problem because of how weak the gears are, Evo gears do fairly well in the realm of things that I've seen.

I've thought a ton about doing the 1-2 on my car but it's a big question of how much "race car" can you deal with in a street car lol

One of the OKC locals was talking about this the other day. His '03 VIII made just under 1100whp on a Super99 and going bigger with spray on top. He's doing the face-plated trans on his next rebuild through Hayes Racing.

Since the factory gear is still being used it definitely won't be as strong as a straight-cut "dog box" gear from PPG. But, if the car is light, this is an economical alternative. Also, for the guys who like to weekend warrior their car and do more roll-racing on highways, etc... this is a great alternative.

Call for pricing. I'm not sure why they don't have that on their website yet. They should.

Definitely a very nice alternative if they perform well. A few guys I know are doing this at the moment. Looking forward to some track testing before I pull the trigger.

I was discussing this with some friends over the weekend. One downside is that you can't downshift unless you are perfect at rev matching every time. The main concern was that you have to actually hold the shifter because it will cause it to pop out of gear if you decel. That would be a pain in the butt. Also it is similar to a dogbox in that you have to shift fast every time because lazy shifting will ruin the dogs. Any real world experience concerning these issues from users on here?

holding the shifter into gear doesn't sound right.

yeah, i could see it theoretically popping out if you get bucking, but under decel it's loaded just like accel.

and I'm curious why someone said you have to rev match to downshift. My understanding is, it WILL go into any gear you put it in. Even the ones you shouldn't. Not like you rev match to upshift

Because apparently face plates unlike a dog box aren't designed to downshift. That's what I was told. I was sure so I was asking for real world experience.

It works fine...

1st, 2nd, and 5th gear would definitely benefit from this.
