Feed back regarding CAM gears for CT9A issues? (HKS or Tomei?
HI Guys,
IM looking for a cam gear for the EVO IX.
im tossing between the; HKS cam gear or the Tomei cam gear.
Obviously design wise, the Tomei has 5 allen key bolts to hold it in position rather than 3, and is almost half the price.
In my opinion, i personally dislike the anodised RED colour of the Tomei and find the HKS PURPLE pretty hard to beat in terms of aesthetics.
However, i have stumbled across this article on a JZA80 Supra forum, and it has been noted that the HKS cam gear is a 'timing belt eater'.
Thread/Article: http://www.supraforums.com/forum/sho...ng-belt-Eater!

Apparently it has been mentioned that the HKS aluminium used is fairly soft, wearing out and becomes sharp to cut into the belt.
(im not sure whether the material has been updated, but it appears that the currently available cam gears have different color teeth
Has anyone experienced this or can provide their experiences or views?
Thanks & cheers.

Fortunately for you, there are alternate options when it comes to adjustable cam gears that offer 5 anchor points, better durability, and colors other than red. Where longevity is concerned there are two routes:
1) 7075-T6 gives better long-term wear characteristics than the more common 6061-T6. The set I'm using is 7075-T6, but is no longer being made. The only 7075-T6 sets I see currently available however are expensive.
2) Get a 6061-T6 set with beveled teeth and a thick, black, hard-anodized wear layer applied to the tooth rings. I don't believe the HKS set incorporates either of these features, which would account for the accelerated wear. The GSC set has the features you want, is priced right, and the postage to Oz is well worth it.

This doesn't change the fact that the HKS gears have fewer anchor points, wear more quickly than many other gears, and sometimes cost more. This is reality, and there is no getting around it.

Those GSC gears look real nice, with good functionality. I have the one HKS Cam Gear on my IX-MR for about 3 years now, with no issues what-so-ever. I am also running the HKS Kevlar 'belts.

I think Tomei cam gear color matches our valve cover well.
Skunk2 has 6 anchor points, but I found Tomei 5 anchor bolts are bigger than Skunk2 ones. So I sold my Skunk2 and got Tomei ones.
Been using with Powerenterprise timing belts and I see no noticeable wear on belt or cam gears, will check when I have a chance to open the cover again.

and the power enterprise belts are kevlar?
Sorry Ted i wasn't paying attention to the link below.
i wonder whether powder coating the centre area / under high temp would cause the cam gear any issues?

Nothing wrong, I just preferred the larger anchor bolts of Tomei over Skunk 2, although one less.
