R&P wear cant always be seen. Often felt, or diagnosed with marking compound. Uploading high res pictures wont help much. I would def. gotten the transfer checked, and if possible and necessary reshimmed. If the wear is to much, the you would need a new set of ring and pinion.. Ah, the beautiful life of a Evo ownership

The pattern looks off. Did you ever get this resolved?

No, other projects taking priority.

Simply driving the car daily and living with it.

Thank you for analysis, can you describe what the pattern should look like?

It should go straight across the tooth. you can see that its an angle because of the gap on the toe off the tooth, but at the heel, the wear pattern is right on, or maybe even off the edge of, the tooth..

I'm still fighting a drive train noise in my car. It makes the car about undriveable on the freeway, feels like I'm getting stabbed in the ear, the noise is pretty hideous. With some diag and parts swapping this weekend, I'm going to be sending either my tcase or rear diff back for a second look.

Rear diff needed a new ring and pinion in my car. The only good way to tell the difference is to have a known good rear diff to test in the car. If the noise goes away, its the diff. If it stays, it's the tcase..

Drats, that's what I thought. Sht costs minimum $1200. Sigh. The tcase on my gtr cost less than that. This is just simply price gouging.

If anyone coming along this tread

If your Gears looking like the Pictures posted above you can say its GOOD...

Since we do a lot of Repairs on the Tcase here in Germany, that Load Pattern is the best you can expect after changing the ring and pinion, since the Adjuster Shim for the Tcase Nose is not available in perfect sizes. ( Adjusts the depth of the Pinion )

A Tcase looking like the pictures will not do any noise, nor will be an failure.

We had NEVER have an defect on any Transfercase due to Power or Driving / Wear.
Also never had Bearing fails...

All Whining Tcases had failed due to:

Not enough Oil inside ( if less than 400ml, it Fails. 600 - 650 Milliliter is perfect )
or
False OIL ( GL4 oils instead the recommended GL5 EP )

The GTR doesn't have a transfer case... The stuff costs what it costs. Shep is around $1k for a tcase with an OEM ring and pinion, same for rear diff.

Sigh, my rear axle i meant.

And I can tell you with 100% certainty that the r35 gtr has a transfer case. It's integrated into the transmission. I've rebuilt both 3 times on different cars.

An example of a tc part in a GT-R: http://sheptrans.com/product/gtr-r35...ase-bearing-1/

I should have been clearer about tcase parts on the GT-R (but I was talking about my rear axle).

It does, but its not the same type of transfer case as an Evo. Its not a hypoid gearset. Its looks like its a chain driven transfer, much like a 4wd truck. Which is far cheaper to work on as the gears and chain likely don't fail, and bearings aren't expensive.

The expensive part of the Evo transfer case is the ring and pinion...

Still haven't addressed this but this makes me wonder if rear diff noise could sound like it's coming from the tcase/tyranny area?

Have oem fluid in the rear, any thicker fluid I can put in?

No, hats the tcase. tcase is hard to discern where its coming from. Rear diff sounds like rear diff. nd changing fluid won't help. Once its whining, its whining.
