Complete turbo failure?

Hi everyone, I need some insight on my evo IV turbo. It completely gave out while i was driving in fourth gear with very little boost (4-5 psi) when i felt a physical bump in the engine, but spotted nothing when i pulled over and checked out the engine. I knew it was the turbo when i drove it back home because there was no boost and no power. Taking out the turbo I found that the compresser fins were bent badly but have no idea why as there is no shaft play and the shaft didnt break as i thought. Does anyone know why this could happen?
