Replace 6-speed with lift
Hi all,
If all goes well I should be replacing my 6-speed next week (Evo 9 MR), and I've read up on the various guides for replacing the transmission, and I know it's probably one of the worse jobs on these cars, but I wanted to know if anyone had any tips on doing it with a 4-post lift. Almost all the guides are for doing it on the floor with regular floor jacks and stands, but since I have a 4-post lift, is there anything different in the removal process to make this easier? I intend to get a transmission jack to make it easier too.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

Well if you have a lift it should be easy to see how you can change the procedure to help swap out the transmission.
With the lift it will be easier to remove the front subframe and transfercase. I recommend using the trans jack to lower the front sub-frame first. Then take it off the lift so you can use it to hold up the transmission.

The problem with doing it on a 4 post vs a 2 post is that the weight of the vehicle will have to be supported on the tires vs the pinch welds/ frame. So your lift really isnt gunna help you that much unfortunately. Even if you have the sliding jack it'll end up in the way...
This is why I feel a 2 post is far more versatile than a 4 post which will limit you with most jobs aside from basic fluid swaps. The rolling jack will help with some basic suspension work to be able to get the wheels off the frame of the lift but aside from that a 4 post is better for stacking cars.

Thanks guys!
heel2toe - Yea, I have the sliding jack too so was planning on using that. Because of the full runners I can actually place the car on jack stands on the lift too, which gets the sliding jack out the way if needed (and basically becomes like the car is on the ground, but suspended 6ft up with unrestricted access below!)
Thanks!

Well, if you can use jack stands on the runners without it being sketchy then having the lift will be helpful. If it were me I'd get the car high up in the air and pull off all the crap from below that you can...things like cross tie things downpipe driveshaft etc. Then set the car on jackstands and get the wheels off axles pulled lower engine mount etc. Are you planning on dropping the subframe or not? If you have a helper I wouldn't bother dropping the subframe. One person get under the car and the other use a prybar to move the engine out of the way and snake the trans out. Im not sure a trans jack will be helpful unless you plan to drop the subframe and then it'll help you ease the trans down.
