New clutch/transmission, stuck pedal! Help :(
New clutch/transmission, stuck pedal! Help :(
Hi all,
Just got my new built 6 speed with new Exedy clutch installed, and the shop ran in to an issue right at the end!
They put it all back together and now the clutch pedal won't move like the release bearing is stuck. It literally won't budge at all.
Any ideas any one? He said he's going to come back tomorrow and pull it all apart again, but maybe there is something that can be done without pulling it? The bearing looks seated properly through the inspection window...
When installing it he claims that the input shaft was different on the new transmission... Not sure how that could be.. He said it had "a step in it" and he thinks the bearing is caught on it.. Does that make any sense??
Thanks for any help!

I have to add this shop aren't extremely familiar with Evo's... It was the only shop on xmas eve that would do it. They do a bunch of work on other performance cars, and were recommended by my drifting friends. Last Evo they did was a year ago he told me (after he did the work!).
Thanks!

What model is that Exedy clutch? How are the wave-springs that the TOB is riding on?
How many splines did you count on each input shaft? If they are the same then the installer must have made the mistake during the assembly (mating trans to engine block). It could cause the input shaft to bind up in the throw-out bearing.

It's an Exedy stage 1 HD.. Not sure about the spline count on the input shaft - wouldn't it be the same on every Evo?
I guess I'm trying to work out if there is even a possibility Shep made a mistake..
Thanks!

I've heard of the step problem, not on an Evo but on a DSM, the throwout bearing wore into the aluminium transmission boss it slid on. The owner reported that sometimes when he tried to use the clutch it would catch.
I'm just going by what the shop told you. BTW, if that is the problem, the boss the throw out bearing rides on is a bolt on part. So, other than wait time if you order one, not a big deal (well, it is a bolt on part on the 5-speed, I know nothing about the 6-speed).

I had planned for all this to be done weeks ago, but there were a few delays at Shep (the transmission was shipped to them in October, but got it back here two days ago!), so now I'm kinda screwed

Hope it's nothing major and he fixes it today.. Then I gotta get my KWv3's on tonight, aligned at 7am, and on track at 9am!! Talk about cutting it close.... :/
Thanks!

Okay, found the issue and clutch is in! For some reason there was an "adapter" like sleeve on the input shaft so it could take a bigger bearing (presumably).. Installer took that off and everything fit together fine. I'm guessing previous owner had a clutch that used a bigger release bearing?
Anyway, new problem now.. I drove 100 miles down to Monterey (Laguna) and the three ACD lights have come on. The installer obviously knew nothing about the ACD fluid system.. The ACD reservoir is virtually empty (and I forgot to check when I was the shop since we were in such a hurry).
I am hoping that the ACD pump protected itself from running dry (I believe I read that the ACD switches to open diff and turns off the pump if there is an error).
Anyway, I may not be able to get the ATF SP-III fluid in the morning and I don't want to go on track with a broken ACD.. So I'm going to get some equivalent fluid from an auto shop... I know everyone says "just use OEM", but if I can't get OEM, I assume any SP-III rated equivalent is fine (like Castrol, Valvoline, etc)?
Didn't get the coilovers on, so gonna try to get them on before the second day (got car back late then realized I needed my spring tensioners to get the hats off the old suspension, and I couldn't find them - actually got one of the shocks off the car before I realized too).
Thanks!

This isn't something Shep missed this is someone working on your car who doesn't know what there doing. Been there many times. Even the shops that are supposed to know what their doing and have worked on evo's screw up royally. I just bought a brand new trans from shep shipped to them from japan spent $4000 on the trans $1250 to swap the trans send to shep etc, $1750 on renting the dyno and tuning, to have the shop that installed it leave the front axle popping out leaking fluid all over the place. The problem with the axle was the boot wasn't slid down far enough and was pulling on the axle. DON'T TRUST ANY SHOPS THEY ALL SUCK that's my experience. Double check behind them and don't trust anything they tell you.
