2.3 clearances

Hey guys, just wondering what kind of clearances you're running on your 2.3's. And what viscocity oil.

i have a brand new rotating assembly going together (crank, pistons and rods) and am going to be at 550-600 whp. Will also be using 20-50 bp oil. So i know i need some more clearance. Just wondering what you guys have been successful with. Thank you all

.002"-.0025" is good. .003" is pretty loose. Make sure you check side clearance on the rods also, that should be .010"-.012"

That is actually what another very experienced builder said, that 0.003" would only be happy at 8500, too loose.

Thanks bro, you have always helped me out with critical info.

I am running .0025 on mains and .0023 on rods with no problems for my 2.2

Piston wall clearance is at .004 for Wiseco HD1400, with a 20 overbore
ring gap as per manufacture specs. http://www.wiseco.com/PDFs/Manuals/RingEndGap.pdf

No piston noise when cold or hot, and great oil pressure 30-25 PSI at idle hot.

Oil is Valvoline VR1 20w-50 full synth

Bleed down and compression test both good @ 1500 miles after build

Edit: the oil clearances were done at close to room temp (70F)

only to double check my measurements with my digital bore gauge, but the gauge is far more accurate.

this:

and this helps a lot.

Thanks so much for your info, did you end up buying the jegs bore gague? or a different brand? I need to buy one but have not yet, also, did you use a rod bolt stretch gague? if so which brand?

I ordered extra clearance bearings, mains would be align honed and crank is brand new, I wonder if this will make it too wide for clearences

When line honing the mains, the machine shop mills the face of the cap, then re-bores the mains to factory spec/size.

I use snap gauges, then measure them with a Mic, that way I only needed to buy one expensive tool.

using those tools in video would be nitemare for first time builder. I consider myself a well seasoned builder and dont use them. very difficult to get accurate readings. stay away.
use plastigauge for rod and mains. use six pieces per bearing.
use feeler gauge to measure piston to wall.
I set rod to crank side clearance at .006
piston to wall .0045
crank and rods .002 or tad bigger
top ring .020-.024
second .024-.028

You're not supposed to use more than one piece of plasti gauge in a bearing. It's not measuring oil clearance properly you have 6 pieces all the way around the journal.

And 6 thou side clearance is scary tight. OEM is 6-10. 10-12 has proven itself time and time again as a great side clearance when there is only one rod per journal.

I run rings at the tight end of your spec, Jerry.
