cam questions.

hello I have a few questions. I have a pretty stock evo 8. it has an exhaust, intake and for some odd reason a fuel pump. I have a set of 280 bc cams I want to put in. I was wondering if it would be fine to put them in with out any other big mods (turbo, port polish, ect.) I will get a tune and I will be putting in valve springs, hla, cam gears, head studs and headgasket all at the same time. I talked to a tuner here and he said it might make more hp it might not. so im looking for a second opinion or maybe some dyno sheets or something. I really just need to know if the car will run fine with out a bigger turbo. I have a bw s366 but I want to build the engine befor I put that in. and I need a t4 manifold for that.

My advice is to have a goal in mind of what power you will make and what your power band will be like. You really want the cam to match the setup. Are you trying to rev really high and forgo the midrange? If the answer is yes then for sure continue with your build.

Honestly don't expect a lot of power from these cams. I had them and I had the same bolt ons and stock 8 turbo like you. On 93 octane I made 310 hp at 23 psi on AMS dyno years ago.with same cams ,9 turbo on e85 made 365@31 psi on mustang dyno .

Those cams will not work well with a stock turbo. They're going to push the power band out of the efficiency range of the turbo.

280 are meant for bigger turbos. I tried the exact same model on a 2.0L with Tomei Arms 7960 turbo. Low end power loss was so significant the car was no fun to drive anymore, we removed the 280s & replaced them with BC stage 1 cams which as I recall are 266.

U was told by the tuner to get an evo 9 exhaust side for the turbo and it'll make more power then with what I have now. I'm not looking to make a racecar just yet. I have that bw and when it gets put in I'm going to try to get it to rev out to 10 or 11k

I guess yall missed my jokes. what I really want to know is if it will end up hurting the car with the cams only or if it will be fine. I don't expect it to make significant gains im just wondering how the car will handle it.

What's the difference if you don't mind me asking? I know none of the cams are ever truly the same with the durations and lobe profiles but why a kelford over a bc?

Better quality there are old threads showing a BC cam breaking. I haven't had personal experience with a BC cam for example but Kelford and GSC would be my favorite options. Have a read for the cam test that was done years ago and hopefully that helps you with your decision.
