I also have this issue with my IX. I think my issue is the car is lowered and doesn't have the roll center correction kit.

dont try and mess with it too much or else it will break completely, i had to order a brand new steering column, plus if you do go to order one they are very hard to find brand new.

Yeah, there's some things in the column that break loose allowing the column to collapse in a collision. Sometimes they break loose without a collision. I've heard of some perhaps successful repairs but being that this is an important piece of safety equipment I think replacement is better.

When you hear that you know you're not the only one. Otherwise, they'd have one on the shelf.

I've had mine out and it is awkward. Start by removing the seat. The manual warns you to never unlock the tilt until fully installed or some bad thing happens. Second, you have to deal with the clock spring behind the wheel. It needs to be kept at the same tension. There's an amazing number of electrical plugs. There's the splines, both at the wheel and at the firewall. You need to get them back the same or your steering wheel is crooked. Then there's a sliding clamp at the firewall which I just could not get on by myself. It is a three handed job. I put a worm clamp in its place. Finally, I found my steering was slightly crooked which I fixed by resetting toe. I know how to set toe accurately.

So, the normal number of frustrations you encounter when working on this car. You decide.
