Will a K&N panel filter reduce boost

My question is this. Will a drop in K&N filter reduce your boost level with a K&N panel filter? I read in Import Tuner that the stock ECU reduces boost if you have too much air coming in (They lost HP when they added a cold air intake on the EVO). I just had a race that was WAY too close with an Impreza WRX, and i gotta know if this might be the issue, or if he was heavily modded. BTW why is 4th gear soo pathetic on these cars?

Not that i know of ... the jdm models make 1.3-1.35 kg/cm2 of boost stock with just the k&N panel filter and no other mods.

They probably lost HP because the fact of the matter is few Intake solutions are as efficient as the stock air box on the CT9A chassis.

My 4th is like a rock. How many miles you got on the clutch/tranny denom? Maybe yours is starting to wear. -just a thought.

I've not had any problems with power loss or poor performance in any gear. Maybe I'm just lucky. Anyone else?

Thanks!

Perhaps it's a shifting issue? I've yet to see declarative evidence of the optimal shift points for our Evos...

4th gear seems to pull hard to me. Like Jemm said, the airbox on our car's is plenty sufficient unless you are making lots of power. It flows really well. And a panel filter shouldn't make any noticable difference in power, whether it is K&N or OEM. So my guess is either the WRX got the jump on you or was modded.

Oh he definitely didn't have the jump. I was on it, and he was on it behind me. The first run I beat him by over 3+ cars. The next run he had to stomp on the brakes or he would've mashed into my EVO. I thought I smelled something funny when he was ahead of me. I'm not sure if it was nitrous though (Eventhough my 00 Z28 had n20-LOL). It just seemed like when I hit 5th I gained some ground on him, as I had to apply the brakes from hitting his rear end. It was the weirdest race i have had. I'm just curious if this P.O.S. stock ECU will reduce my boost cause the K&N filter draws in too much air.

To me the K&N has increased the pull up top, by just a little, had one for about 10K miles, I'm totally stock. Not sure if the boost has decreased, but I dont have much of a problem with the 300hp Porsche's on the freeway.

Having two WRX's in the past - the guy could of had a high and low boost setup. The WRX with boost control to a semi-safe 16 psi, and an exhaust will nicely beat a 240hp M Roadster even with heat soak. WRX's just like Evo's wake up nicely with engine management and nothing else. A well tuned WRX is pretty damn fast, but one without engine management and more boost is on borrowed time.

If you're gonna run someone on the highway, turn on the auto spray and pre-wet the intercooler for about 2-5 seconds. For 91 oct this works wonders. Hold down the manual spray while going through 4th gear...it hauls ***....make sure you keep things wet after 6800 rpm with the sprayer, shift into 5th at 7400 rpm. Weather and gas brand will vary things.

if you smell some funny shiznit on the WRX, its probably cause he took off the 3 catalyic converters on his WRX. WRX's are no joke, once they are modded, they are fast.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the feedback. I'm getting a Megan catback exhaust in about a month (It's on back order from JDM racing). Hopefully that will help me out. I was just totally caught off guard by this guy. The first time we ran I slaughtered him, the next time he was just a little quicker. WEIRD
