I'm parting out a shortblock, its currently sitting my garage, how do I take the crankshaft out of the motor?

 

Not sure how specific you want us to be, but...

After you've fully stripped the shortblock and removed your oil pump front cover as well as the rear main seal housing, all you have to do is remove the main studs/bolts in an even crossing pattern until they have no more tension on them. At that point you can just unscrew them completely and set them aside. Then, tap the main girdle upwards with a rubber mallet and it should begin to come loose. You should be able to then carefully pull the crank out of the shortblock.

 

this is how the engines sitting, so should i take off the oil pan and undo the main caps on the crankshaft?

 

Buy and put it on engine stand.

This is safe and easy way.

 

i have the engine upside down with the oil pan off, the bolts are just extremely tight

 

Your likely using simple tools. You need a 1/2 ratchet about 2 foot long or a good 3/8 with a pipe extendo

 

The front case and rear main seal housing will need to come off first. Then you'll need a breaker bar (or ratchet with a pipe to extend the handle), to remove the main cap bolts.
