Yesterday I was driving on a winding mountain road and the car popped out of 5th. Today it happened again, so I put it back in and drove about 1 mile before it happened again. All of my gears shift nicely solid feel no grinding, and easy to get in. Also I almost never use fifth, and really don't use it when I drive hard. I recently rebuilt the transfer case, is it possible, and this is very hopeful, that the shift linkage just needs some adjustment?

 

Definitely an issue. Im no drivetrain expert, but could be a no. of things. Something simple would be:

• Worn motor mounts, causing the tranny to twist under acceleration

More severe issues could be:

• Bent/ damaged shift forks or some other internal tranny issue

Unfortunately it’s not motor mounts. I have almost brand new solid aluminum mounts I just drove around some more. If I accelerate hard or coast it stays in gear but when I start cruising I can with my hand on the shifter I can feel it pushing its way out of gear under light acceleration. There is definitely something internal.

 

Does it go into 5th cleanly with the car off?

 

It does go into 5th cleanly car on or off. No matter my Shep stage 1 5 spd is on the way.
