The retainers and valve stems are the weak links, not the springs. Double springs are not likely to save you from a valve crash should a spring fail. Twice the number of springs doubles the chances that one will fail. There are reasons to upgrade from stock springs and retainers when caming up but these are not on topic for this thread.

Just a thought.
No its not advised. Only if youre getting seroius cams like JUN is it reccomended to get upgraded springs and retainers. HKS cams you dont need them, dont waste your money, thats completely unecessary

Hey guys, im looking into getting cams and cant make up my mind so many good points on this thread, makes it hard to decide. This is what im looking for and this is what i have/plan on doing. I want some cams that are good with stock turbo(because im not upgrading), daily driver, great/like stock idle, better top end power because thats where i think the evo is lacking. I currently have Helix DP, HFC, Greddy Ti catback, Boost set at 20 psi, Dynoflash, and 255 lph fuel pump. Which setup do you think would best suit my situation.

This is a two part question.

1) What is wrong with the stock cams?

2) What duration and lift are the stock cams?

Nothing is wrong with the stock cams if you aren't looking for a significant increase in power.

The stock cams are 260 deg advertised duration and 10mm lift intake, 256 and 9.5mm exhaust.

I just got 272 straights installed and flashed. As far as performance, +50whp total, was expecting more but...

As far as feel on the road, it almost felt stock except there noticable throttle response w/ ready torque and yes it does pull all the way to 7500 rpm.

I still got lumpty lump espcially noticable after warmups.

Bottom line, why not just get 272 straight. It's noticable across the pwr band and I really don't notice drop at lowend.

Just lots of lumps...

I had my 272 straights installed at TT and the guy said past customers w/ 264s now wish they had 272 straights...

I have not tried 264s but from my 272s I can agree cuz I don't see any drawbacks except some lumps. And 272s should be noticable improvement over 264 combos at high end of rpm range...my thoughts...gl

I've never looked back from my 272/272s. There is no noticeable "loss" anywhere compared to stock... only "gain".

i have read at places that you lose lower end torque with the 272's. i really want to improve the whole band and not lose anything in that respect is the 272/264 the best then?

272/264 low - mid end power increase street setup
264/272 mid - high end power increase street setup

Both work great. Depends on what mods you plan on putting on the car also.

...and I've read places you "noticeably" lose low end torque with a 3" downpipe too, but that also is a load SHlT. Compared to stock, you won't "notice" anything with either but more power. About the only thing you "give up" with the 272 set is a smooth idle... but most seem to like the V8ish lopeiness. I've yet to install them on a car that stalled though (except for cars running an aftermarket MAF pipe untuned).
